Calls for Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama to resign are mounting among lawmakers in his own Democratic Party of Japan as well as opposition parties. Should he resign and if so, who do you think would do a good job as prime minister?

Nobody in the J govt would be able to do a good job. Anybody that gets put in the 'seat' would have dirt uncovered on him/her. They all are are corrupt, and it all stems from money.

No, he should not resign. He should stay in power for as long as possible to allow his incompetence - and the fact that his party came to power in a landslide - to "sink in" to the Japanese people. The fact that prime ministers in this country are so easily able to walk away from their messes by simply resigning truly underscores how meaningless elections here are in the first place. The people need to be held accountable for voting him and his party in power. When the US votes a bad president into power, the people deserve everything they get. They are forced to live with their decision for at least 4 years. This helps effect change. But change will never come to Japan unless and until the people are forced to put up with their horrible choice for years and years... Only then will they start voting quality politicians into office.

Nobody can make a decision or knows how to have a point. There is no future and no past and no plan. So rule by PM Committee. Majority decisions of the PM Committee are granted via five pairs of Yahtzee Dice. That would do a good job. Couldn't be worse

I think he should stat on as PM. Japan desperately needs political stability. Four prime ministers in four years is ridiculous. Besides, dismissing Fukushima from the cabinet is no reason to resign. It is her fault, not his. As PM, Hatoyama is her boss, whether she agrees with his policies or not.

We really need to think outside the box for a change. I'm for Maruti Tsurunen. What this country needs is a blue-eyed Finn in the PM office. He'll redecorate the place with Scandinavian furniture and serve pickled herring at state dinners.

He should stay. the Japanese 'Sekinin wo toru' concept whereby resigining is synonymous to accepting responsibility is flawed - it would just pass problems on to the next person.
Hatoyama is a bit of a bumbling fool, but as chotto says, his heart is in the right place. He should stay.
Prediction: Ozawa will try to take advantage of the public perception of Hatoyama to step into the PM seat himself.

Well, let's see, Sonomama Higashi is governor of Miyazaki Pref, and Ryoko Tanii (Yawara-chan) is running for the upper house.......here's my top five;
Ken Watanabe: has the "gravitas" and speaks pretty good english....
Kaio (Sumo-tori): has "staying power", 37 years old and still an Ozeki - can easily do more than a year as PM.....
Beat Takeshi: is well know abroad, can pull an "Zatoichi" sword beat down on the Chinese PM if he starts anything in the Senkakus...
Tsuyoshi Kusanagi (SMAP): speaks great Korean and know's how to have a little fun when he's tipsy....
Ichiro Suzuki: As any Japanese can tell you, he can do anything.....

I would be inclined to say anybody but Kan, Okada or Maehara, all of whom (along with Hatoyama) did nothing when they were leaders of the DPJ in opposition. Now if these three are excluded, then the only real alternative would be everybody's favorite bogeyman, Ichiro Ozawa, who despite some serious ethical issues, no doubt has all the skills required for leadership.
Firstly, he was once described as the most zealous acolyte of Kakuei Tanaka, the quintessential Japanese politician, a mixture of strong-armed bully-boy and adroit power-monger. Secondly, as a veteran head-kicker, Ozawa has the ability to put some spine into people and scare the crud out of political adversaries. This is something that the DPJ needs at the current time. Instead of allowing certain minor parties to dictate policy agenda, the DPJ needs to take the initiative both in terms of policy and in terms of slapping down its political opponents. I for one would love to see the SDP eviscerated as a political force.

Gosh...turn it into a reality tv show (said sarcastically) with a dozen or so candidates doing battle week in week out and the home viewers voting them off (but doubt anyone would watch). But it wouldn't matter who won at the end because his poll rating will plummet (as is the usual case in japan) after 6 months in office.

Ozawa will very likely become PM one day soon. He almost single-handedly brought a albeit temporary end to nearly 50 years of LDP rule when he quit the party in 1993, and has always wanted the top job. If anyone is destined to lead Japan, it's him.

No, Hatoyama should not resign.
He may be a terrible leader, but I do not believe there is anyone better who can fill his shoes right now. I'd rather have 1 useless PM at the helm for 4 years, than 4 useless PMs in 4 years.
Ozawa should go to jail. Period.
