21 degrees was ideal summer weather for me in Norfolk - England. In Japan it still amazes me that some people still wear gloves and scarfs when it's 21 degrees, and if there is a slightest breeze it is met with with a group chorus of 'samui'...
cleo: My English friend in the States might disagree with you. When he's returned to England for his annual summer visits the locals have complained nonstop about the record heat waves. This in a country where AC barely exists.
paulinusa - Why would your English friend disagree? The UK is now experiencing record heat waves. The reason AC barely exists is that up until recently there was no need for it. Like I said, in my yoof (that's what the question is about) it was much cooler.
When I was a kid in Lancashire, or even a student in warm sunny London, I never, ever, not once, experienced temperatures of 30 degrees, except in Fahrenheit. 75 F (we used old money back then) was a nice balmy summer's day; 78F was a heat wave. These days my relatives back home seem to regularly swelter in temperatures in excess of 80+F. Unheard of when I was a gal. Only forn parts ever got that hot back then.
I tend to agree that summers these days are a lot hotter than they where when l was growing up. Coming from Australia apart from the summer just gone which was unusually wet (where lm from anyway) l must say the past 10 years the summer tempratures have been hotter than l can remember.
No, I think it was the opposite, summers were hotter then, at least when you count the number of really hot days. I think what has changed more noticeably is that winters and spring have become warmer. Anyway, this is based on my - probably distorted - memories. More accurate statistics should be available.
not really here USA - Vermont.
ive seen Hotter summers. But the last 2 summers haven't been that Hot.
VT is known for snow but in the summer its hot & Humid, but not recently
I'm from the Caribbean so I can tell you that I am more than glad winter's over and summer is here. Hotter than when I was a kid? Mm, can't really tell. Feels as hot as when I first came to Japan 5 years ago.
*Compared to summers in cool northern California, Tokyo summers are an ordeal in themsleves. A time to leave. I've lived here for 48 years and yes, it does seem outdoors the heat is hotter - but we have (had) better air-conditioning. In the '60s here, only the affluent had air conditioners and even then only in one containable room, where they used it only periodically on special occasions. *

Cant say about the summer in Japan, Of course I moved to Japan so completely different summer.
Actually the summers in Holland were getting worse the last 5 years. Colder and more rain each year.

I do not believe opinions are scientifically sound. Just Google the stats.
I prefer it hot and humid so I can wear short shorts, and catch some rays.

The summers feel hotter now, because of I am in Tokyo.
In my youth in NY, it was very hot, as well, but the pool and beach season started from May 31st.
Daylight savings started from April.
We didn't have air conditioning in my youth, but we managed, as pools, lakes, streams and beaches were open, and easy to access.
School was done before it got too hot to play outside from morning to midday.
Schools here are open too late in the season, and pools don't open until then.
They are regulated to the oppressive, open for only 3 hour shifts, and close early.
The beaches are a long, expensive haul.
Better to leave, in summer.
Too many people walking around in wool caps, and cardigan sweaters.
