Hollywood is in full remake mode this year, with "My Fair Lady" (Keira Knightley as Eliza Doolittle) the latest project announced. Which of your favorite movies would you absolutely not like to see remade?

Definitely "My Fair Lady." I can't imagine who they'll cast as 'enry 'iggins. Other movies I wouldn't like to see remade are "Casablanca," "The Maltese Falcon," "North by Northwest" and heaps of golden oldies. I think it is very difficult to remake a movie when it and the characters are indelibly tied to certain actors, such as Bogart, Errol Flynn, John Wayne, Cary Grant and so on.

In any case, remakes (or "re-imagination" as the new "Star Trek" is being called) are seldom better. The only thing modern filmmakers can improve on is special effects and other technology, but today's scriptwriters and directors are not skilled at recapturing the charm of those old movies, most of which reflected their time and the norms of society then.

And even with superb special effects, they make a mess. Look at that disastrous remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" with Keanu Reeves.

I would rather filmmakers try harder to come up with original ideas, but I suppose there are only so many themes that haven't been filmed before.

    How about Steve Martin?

Good god, what is the point of remaking My Fair Lady? There is no way it will be as good at the original, even if they do a good job. They need to remake mediochre films with interesting premises that fell short of their potential, or films that could massively benefit from improved special effects... not classics.

    Chopper Reed.

    Star Wars 4, 5, 6.

    Beetlejuice. (just for a laugh)

I'm with Triumvre. Films that had potential but fell flat due to poor writing (which is usually to blame for the failure of most re-makes) would be interesting to see once given the proper attention they deserve. War of the Worlds is a good example. So is the Keanu Reeves version of The Day the Earth Stood Still, which was simply shocking in its predictability and "hammer on the head" delivery.

If Hollywood writers could somehow step away from that damnable template that all would-be screen writers seem to be issued when they finish film school, and get down to writing real stories about real people, rather than working feverishly to ensure every script meets the standards of checklist, we might get somewhere.

Seemingly weak, but genuinely strong female lead role. Check.

Cheeky kid with authority figure issues. Check.

Authority figure who abuses power. Check.

Alien with the best interests of everyone at heart. Check.

    Spiffy CG. Check.

It's tired already. Has been since CG got affordable.

Thought about and came up with the one movie that should be untouchable as possible re-make fodder, in my opinion.

It's a Wonderful Life........They should pass a law banning anybody from even thinking about remaking that one.

It's a wonderful life was remade with Marlo "That Girl" Thomas in the leading role in 1977. It was called "It Happened One Christmas". Wish it hadn't! "Psycho" was also remade, in 1998, wasn't it? "Magnificent 7" (Originally "7 Samurai") was remade as "Battle Beyond The Stars" with Richard "John Boy" Thomas as a psuedo Luke Skywalker. Robert "Man From Uncle" Vaughn even reprised his role. Almost a prefect B movie, except John Saxon wasn't in it. George "A Team" Peppard was though... I figure Hollywood can remake anything they want to. Whether people will go and see the remakes is another story. I think most won't.

My mistake, it is a perfect B movie. John Saxon IS in it.

I think "Lawrence of Arabia" should't be "remade" and even if it were I can't see how it could possibly better the original.

The question is, "Which of your favorite movies would you absolutely NOT like to see remade?" So smartacus is saying that "My Fair Lady" wouldn't be a good remake.

Why, "Gone with the Wind" of course. Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara are Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, and vice versa. As much as I would be curious to see if any of today's actors/actresses could play those characters, I don't think any of them can portray those characters like Gable and Leigh did.

Ben-Hur c.c; and The Ten Commandments.

    Also, The Sound of Music.

Azrael, I also thought of The Sound of Music. And some movies with Peter O'Toole like already mentioned Lawrence of Arabia, and movies with Audrey Hepburn.
