Of course the American animation is better than the Japanese animation. Only asians pay attention to Japanese animation, whereas people all over the world pay attention to American animation.

Please don't compare American animation to Japanese animation. It's an insult to the American animation.

Japanese. You gave us "Appleseed", Ghost in the Shell, both the first and the 2nd film. We gave you "Cars". We gave you complete episodes that the story line lasted about 23 minutes. You gave us "Gundam Wing", Dragonball. Please don't think I'm putting down all of the creative artists we have. I'm not. I do wish they didn't have to conform to all the stupid politics and direction from the main office. They seem to be interested only in the profit margin, not if the story has been told. We have a lot of work to do and experimentation with animation to get where you are.

Has anybody watched a movie made by Czech filmmaker Karel Zeman in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s and 1960s? He didn't have at his disposal the immense means that a Disney or a Tezuka could count upon, and yet is artwork stands tall above all the Mickey Mouse and Japanese robot flicks ever made.

Wake up, everybody! European animated movies are far better than American or Japanese ones.

It really depends on the era. I have to say classic American animation still blows away anything still. Tex Avery and the mayhem he created it doesn't get better that. His work was what inspired 'The Mask' with Jim Carey. And Hannah and Barbara in the 40's and 50's Tom and Jerry shorts. Timeless comedy. And of course Chuck Jones and Company, which the Roadrunner shorts were my favorite. Wile Coyote super genuis. That guy kept ACME company from dire financial straits through his constant ordering of Burmese tiger traps and rocket sleds etc. You really can't compare any of that it to modern animation as in my opinion it blows away anything that came after. I think a better question would be 'Is modern American animation better than Modern Japanese animation? But still a good question to discuss like comparing apples to oranges or as Daffy and Bugs would say 'Wabbit Season' 'Duck Season'.

I believe Walt Disney was the pioneer (and creator) of animation, so hats off to the Americans.

I remember watching "Voltron" and "Yamato" when I was in elementary school and high school, and watching Looney Tunes (I'm with you, smartacus -- Looney Tunes have a special place in the ticker). I found Japanese animations to be rather stiff, robotic, while American Animations tended to be more fluid, more life-like. While the Japanese Animation has gotten a bit better, they still all seem too stiff, robotic, emotionless, and twitchy in some egree or another...

I would say, comparing the best of both, American is better. On the average however, Japanese anime is better.

I base that on what many above stated.
The very early Disney and Warner Bros. products from the 40's and 50's was amazing. I could still sit down and watch Fantasia.

Japanese, on the other hand, I think is cooler. I don't know how to describe it other than to say the "swoosh" often used to illustrate fast movement in Japanese anime is what I'm talking about.

I also like how occasionally, to show a quick change in action or a comic aside, how Japanese anime will switch mid-scene.

Blue Tiger, you got it spot on!

Japan animation may be cooler, but they lack a certain quality of emotion because of the stiff, rigid locomotion. Can we just admit America rocks our socks off in the 3-d department?

Movies like Beowulf is just Incredible.

I think you need to see "Appleseed", Ghost in the Shell innocence, and lets not forget "Blood the last vampire". Stiff rigid locomotion? see the above films. I do watching Boomerang, which show cases Hanna Barara. Man, those were some of the most fasinating toons I saw as a kid. It was always after school and even during a week night. I really miss those toons, which is why I watch Boomerang. However, I didn't buy Jonny Quest, but I did buy "Ergo Proxy".

Anyone who's seen "Sen To Chihiro..." could not possibly answer America to this one
