Don't talk about past relationships, don't make small talk, don't ogle passing women or men. Avoid going to a movie on a first date because you don't know each other yet. You sit there during the movie trying to mentally prepare conversation for wherever you go afterwards. Movies are something you can enjoy together after you get to know each other.
I prefer a first date to be something with a limited time, maybe lunch. That way, if you don't feel any chemistry, you can finish quickly.
Finally, don't expect (or even desire) the first date to end up in bed. That removes a lot of anxiety beforehand. Personally, I think sex on the first date is not a good way to start a long-term relationship.

I think it's important to remember that what goes down well elsewhere, is not a guaranteed winner in a romantic setting. Lighting one's farts, for instance, is unlikely to win the heart of a lady outside the Liverpool area.
