If it's still there and they haven't concreted it over, Todoroki Koen in Tokyo is amazing. Best if you come across it by accident.

No spoilers. If you live in or near Tokyo, just find where it is and go there.

Most nature places or temples I've been to in Japan are free, you just have to pay transport to get there. Tokyo city (Asakusa's Sensoji, Meiji Shrine, Akihabara, Shibuya, to name a few), Mount Fuji, Nikko, Kamakura, Hiroshima (Peace Memorial Park, Miyajima and Itsukushima Jinja) , Kyoto (Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari, Yasaka Jinja, Kurama Kibune), Okinawa's beaches, Nara's park (entrance to Todaiji though will require fee), Ise Shrine, Mount Koya, Kobe (Harborland, Chinatown), Osaka (Dotonbori), and so many more.

Most castles will only charge for entrance inside the castle, Himeji Castle, Osaka Castle, Matsumoto Castle just on top of my head doesn't charge to enter the park areas where you can get a good look and pictures of the castles.

I travel a lot in and outside of Japan. In Japan, I enjoy go people watching in Akihabara, Shinjuku on a Friday evening, Yoyogi Koen on a Saturday morning (plus this little street in front of the NHK concert hall as fun live bands). I frequently use this event discovery app: http://idrop.in/ for finding free stuff to do.

I think that the area around the Tokyo Imperial Palace is quite impressive and a must-see. I also love Ueno koen, especially during the Hanami season is stunning.

The Canadian Embassy's magnificent stone garden, gallery and library are free. It is also wonderfully cool inside if you need to beat the Tokyo heat. Next door is one of the loveliest, unsung parks as well as the Sogetsu Ikebana school with displays. Classes are not free (but worth taking if you are so inclined).
