What do you think are some of the main differences between Japanese and Western bloggers?

Western bloggers write in western languages, whilst Japanese bloggers prefer to use Japanese.

In terms of the people who comment on the news stories published here (not bloggers), there's little difference, both groups seem to have little or no grasp of English and both groups seem to be fervently and rabidly right wing.

Most Japanese blogs, especially by women, seem to consist of photos of what they ate in the restaurant, their cute dog and their nails after coming back from the salon. They rarely post opinions on any topic.

On the hand, Western blogs tend to be shriekfests, an outlet for people who never had a forum before. One of my friends, who is an American in his 50s, used to hang out at a local pub after work every day for years. He'd sit on his stool drinking and giving his opinion on politics or whatever happened to be on the pub TV at the time. Now he has a blog and that's where he dispenses his sage advice and opinions on the state of the world.

The main difference? Western bloggers KNOW that no one cares about what they write. Japanese bloggers still believe that someone actually cares about their boring life.

Many Japanese blogs tend to be a bit more polite and less confrontational than English blogs.

Actual blogs: Regular Japanese folk post anonymous pictures of things in their boring lives, Western bloggers post pictures of themselves, their worthless opinions, and endless details about their boring lives.

Forum/News comments: If you've ever read 2ch or the comments on Yahoo Japan, Japanese posters somehow manage to make even most JT posters (including Altria!) sound like intelligent, well-balanced individuals. Mindless, right-wing sheep who believe that China, Korea, Zainichi, the mainstream media, the Japan Teacher's Union, and Minshuto are all on a secret conspiracy to destroy Japan.

Japanese bloggers discuss haiku, nature, philosophy, and music. Western bloggers discuss the arts, positive approaches and ideas for the future, world peace, and interpersonal communication.

    Don't you wish.

The Japanese are more enthusiastic in general and it's evident in their blogging style as well. But truth is, there is little difference as most blogs, or at least personal ones, are all boring as most of you have stated regardless of whether the blogger is Japanese or a Westerner.

japanese bloggers usually/often blog via there keitais which are usually equipped with high resolution digital cameras. as such, they can entire numerous, short blog entries throughout the day. western cellular/mobile phones tend to be less sophisticated, so bloggers must rely on their digital cameras. this requires to have access to an internet-ready desktop/laptop PC so, that they can download from their cameras; upload images to the internet and subsequently add comments. with the exception of house-spouses, university students and retirees; westerners tend not to blog with the same frequency as japanese people. a comparison of japanese retirees to swedish retirees found that those in japan were almost 5 times more likely to blog and do so often. if i can add my opinion, i think the proliferation of computer/internet classes aimed at the japanese elderly may have something to do with this phenomenon.

I have absolutely no idea of the difference between Western and Japanese bloggers, because I have never bothered to read any of them, for I assumed they would be boring. And judging by the comments here, that was a pretty good assumption. So thank you all for not enticing me to change my habits!

I agree Speed. They also tend to be more about what happened to them in their day to day lives and more photos I think.

    Some others:

Why the sarcasm toward bloggers and saying nobody cares about their "boring lives?" Everyone has experiences and stories to tell that is interesting to others (if even just to oneself or family). Sometimes people just want to write about what's on their mind. Nobody else has to read it. Japanese bloggers also tend to not be so angry and demeaning to others.

I often find Japanese blogs rather mundane. They are like a journal of events. The only ones that interest me are the ones that overlap with my interests and even those are much like someone just talking about what they did, not about the subject matter.

In blogs in English, I find people often tend to branch out into being purely entertaining. They will exaggerate and ad lib to really make it funny or interesting. This can be life events or reviews or whatever. Of course, on the other end of the spectrum are the emos with strange empty poetry and sob stories... I don't even want to go there.

Yes, exactly. And yet some people *not only read them, but take the time to compare how Westerners and Japanese differ in their style of boring other people! *But... **is observing the difference between two groups of boring people any more interesting than the bores themselves? **I doubt it.

You seem to think that those who believe bloggers are boring people are in reality themselves the boring people. **Well, why not give us some examples of exciting bloggers, and tell us why you think they are interesting? **Actually, this kind of question might be more fruitful than the cliched cultural comparison of Western and Japanese, even to the point of dissecting different nuances of narcissism, egotism and the universal urge to bore other people to death.

I can't tell much differences between japanese and western bloggers.

I also don't care for these differences, better to look for quality of enlightening content in blogs, that is what matter.

I does not matter ,west style or east style.
