Nothing really weird about a Katsu Sando, just unusual for an American cause we got nothing like it, but I can't stop eating them they're great. Some people think cucumber sandwiches are weird but they've just never been to the UK. As for pastries, since they're all a million times better than anything you can find in the U.S.; nothing.
Mixed fruits and whipped cream on white bread--not so strange, I suppose, if you think of the bread as a kind of pound cake...
When I first came here decades ago, I used to get confused at bakeries--what I thought was an orange danish would turn out to be squash, what I thought were raisins on my cinnamon roll turned out to be azuki beans, etc. etc.
Yakisoba on a bun is almost as good as a spaghetti sandwich... :-)
I once ordered what the menu said was a クラブハウスサンド (which I automatically read as "clubhouse") and got a crab salad sandwich instead.
Long ago I saw a strawberry and two slices of tangerine wrapped in a slice of fatty ham with whipped cream surrounding the whole thing on a hot dog bun with that red sliced pickle stuff sprinkled on top. Went well with green tea.
This may me my all time pet peeve about Japan. Sandwiches and bread. Sandwiches are an utter travesty of what a real sandwich should be, how about cranberry smoked chicken on rye? oh no - you have to get potato, corn, mayo and katsu on tasteless, crustless shoku-pan.
The worst? Octupus, cucumber and cream cheese pastry - I kid you not. Tako, cucumber and vinegar is a popular summer dish here, someone thought it would be good to add it to cream cheese and put whack it on some pastry?
Lord help us all.
2 inch think mayo sandwiches at every 7 Eleven,Family Mart, lawsons and etc. 1 piece of meat small thin lettuce. TOns of mayonaise. I hate mayo.
To much mayo destroys the sandwiches
Curry Donuts (mister donuts) is the best

You must be American. :-) Mayo, 2 inch thick sandwiches don't sit too well with us. The Anko donuts, it took awhile to get used to them, but I love beans so I got used to them, I can handle and grown to love them, but eating a hot dog with a curry/mayo mix deep-fried just doesn't make me wanna drool for more.
@Monkeyz
Yes, 100% MEAT ALWAYS needs to be on a sandwich or else it just doesn't qualify as a the real deal. Just slathering sauce on it kinda reminds me of bad remake of "sloppy Joe" yucko!!
What conbinis have you guys been in?! Haha. I don't doubt at all that these things exist, maybe just not where I live. The weirdest I've ever seen at the conbini here are those yakisoba dogs. That makes me ill just thinking about it.
And I totally second the sandwich comments. It makes me crazy to buy a sandwich and get maybe two bites of actual meat and the rest is bread and some kind of sauce or dressing. So stingy!
Please give us some rare insight as to what your particular conbini sells. What makes your local combini stand out from the others? What are we missing, please don't hold back.
oh, seriously, if you want to see strange check out the japanese hotdog sandwich that i have renamed the dogawich. i actually blogged about it on my site at http://www.crazygaijin.com/everything-japanese/kobis-in-a-pickle-hell-have-to-mustard-the-strength-to-ketchup-to-chestnut/
The convenience stores and so called 'bakeries' are a fascinating study in modern Japanese culture. You have a nation with the maxim, still often used, "simple is best", but walk into any of the aforementioned shops and observe the monstrosities. It's not limited to sandwiches or pastries, and pizza is just about the worst example of a cultural 180, but since those are the subject of the thread:
the worst monstrosity I ran into was the 'salad bread', from Miyazaki, I think, but I NEVER had and never would eat the 'hamburgers', 'hotdogs', and what have you that can for whatever reason, despite being meat, sit in unrefrigerated areas for a week before expiration.
what irritates me most are the combination sandwiches. I LOVE tuna salad sandwiches, for example, but I don't like egg salad at all. And yet, I haven't, in all my time here, seen a sandwich that is ONLY tuna (I've seen plenty of egg-only) at a convenience store or bakery, save for once.
There ARE a lot of interesting combination, though. I like some of the cheese breads at my local bakery. And as for the convenience stores themselves, while they offer a lot of wacky flavours and items, they beat North American convenience stores hands down for overall products they sell -- last time I stepped into a conbini back home I was shocked to see NOTHING but softdrinks and junk food.
ugh!!! I've short term memory for disgusting stuff, how can you all remember all that?? Btw I'm soo glad the 'bread' aisle of the conbini I went to today were close to empty. Of course there was still white bread :(
I'll give you that one Yakisoba dogs and potato salad sandwiches, deep-fried curry donuts...Yucko!!
Not to mention the lack of having healthy wheat bread wish Japan would have more access to it. Japan always raves about being a healthy nation, but sells junk bread. They should take a look at German bread but they always unhealthy white bread. Everything has to have mayo on it and who wants to eat a cold combini sandwich that has ben sitting under the light for God knows how long! Also what is up with cutting off the ends of the bread or on sandwiches? That's the best part.
@jtalbot44
Natto is great, love the mustard thing, but on a sandwich.....

One of my favorites is the 'BLT' sandwich - Bacon, Lettuce and Tomago (egg). Gives me a grin every time.

Yaki-soba in a bun. It wasn't too bad, either.
But strawberry and mayo sounds disgusting.

I draw the line at kim chee croissants, though.

Yakisoba-dog. Spaghetti-dog. Why on earth would you slap a wad of saucy bread on bread??
Even Subway can't figure this out: A SANDWICH NEEDS MEAT ON IT.
Hash brown sandwich.
Corn and potato salad sandwich.
What next, a bread sandwich? One slice of brown bread between two slices of white bread with some mayo and cabbage?? I really don't doubt it.

Curried yams in a hotdog bun with sukimono on top. Of course slathered in mayo.
Pastries with soy beans and peas baked into it with a vinegar dressing brushed on them
I am Japanese, but these things have to go away along with curry donuts, yakisoba dogs, and potato salad sandwiches.
