It's not really Christmas illumination but my favorite is the Kobe Luminaire Festival of Light which this year starts on Dec.17 and looks like one of the best designs to date. About 10 million visitors will come.
My house! ;-P The tree goes up Thursday. As I put it away on the 26th or 27th to get ready for New Year's ,I want it up early enough to enjoy it for a little while. I got window candles at Costco this year.
I'll have to check out Luminarie, the frames for the lights start near my gym, so I get a look at the design early. If I'm really lucky I get to see them testing the lights a few days ahead of the official start.
Like Cleo likes the tree in her own house, I like the tree in my own place.
But I don't spend 30,000 yen for one at National Azabu, I have a nifty optic fiber made-in-China table-top one that was only 500 yen the day after Christmas a few years ago!
All lit up! I got GE battery operated LED candles for the windows, did the tree and wrapped the staircase banister in garlands with lights. It's a lot of work but worth it.

Theres a huge one in Shinjuku from Shinjuku station to Tokyuhands but its too much tbh.
Actually im not a huge fan of Japanese xmas illumination. Japanese use too many cold colors, blue etc.
I prefer light ups in Kyoto with the real Japanese lanterns. But thats my taste

I like the illuminations across Musashino-shi.
Most are simple blue lights/Led in trees. Granted Kichijoji goes more .... But way less than previous years.

since Christmas is not celebrated in japan - kfc and kurisumasu keiki not withstanding - why don`t we refer to them as winter illumination?

Ones at Yomiuri-land.
They are so colourful and cheerful. Try the ferris wheel on the top of the hill there. Beautiful.
Too long though. It lasts until March next year...

The Hakodate Christmas Fantasy, beautiful tree and hanabi in the snow reflecting in the sea and then all those beautiful churches.

My house the tree goes up in the morning of Dec 24th(won't get lit till sundown) and stays up till Jan 6th.
Before that the Advent wreath and the 4 candles are the decoration.

For me, considering all the work it is to put up the decorations, two weeks is too short :-D

The best illumination spot is the one you visit with your Japanese girlfriend (or bf).
It's so magical to see the Tokyo Christmas lights with your first Japanese love... you'll never forget it.
Wish I could have those days back... ;-)
But seriously, I love all the Tokyo illuminations... Shinjuku, Roppongi Hills, Omotesando... I'm going to make a point of visiting them all this year!
