No commute, make your own hours. But it is lonely, psychologically it is kind of nice to work separately from home, there are a lot of distractions at home that tempt you away from work, and certain people (read: "Japanese") seem to think working from home is not a "real" job.

Ya could have a nooner everyday? Is that a pro or a con?

All that ChibaChick said, except that with a houseful of critters it isn't lonely. When there are kids in the equation, being home when they come in from school is the biggest pro.

Not having to sit to with unproductive coworkers, not having to do everything in Excel. Not having to commute on a crowded train or anything else that makes Japan so special.

I work at home most of the time and i love it. I work for myself and enjoy the many benefits from it. I would never want to commute again and be part of the rat race, i found it a miserable life with most not happy with their lot. I have found no downside to working at home, life is great since i started this.

The isolation of working at home can be difficult for some personalities; however, there are ways of getting out and mingling with people in clubs or classes or volunteering to offset that. It takes a little planning. However, the spark that can happen between brilliant people is absent at home. (Then again, there's no suffering the dullards and slackers.)

One real advantage is the savings in clothing and dry cleaning costs. Another is not having to worry about the temperature of the office. There is only one office lizard when you work at home and she is the boss. And cool biz attire might be your skivvies.

Working from home is a euphemism for taking it easy. Unless you work for yourself.

I sometimes work at home and it's wonderful. My partner is at work and I use that hour wasted on a crowded train to do some of my chores. It takes a little self-discipline to get yourself out if bed on those miserable January mornings ( another 10 minutes....) but I'm finished at 5:30 and can make the tea. No need for that ridiculous suit either.

As far as Japan goes... no bullying when you work from home.

This is really a subjective question that depends on the home environment and if you are working for a company you own or not.

I do almost all my work from home. I have my own office and the business is a couple of minutes away. I have to deal with customers when they show up 2-3 x per week and other than that the staff takes care of the rest.

Yes, you need self motivation do pull it off. If you need a structured environment with a boss telling you what to do than it will be difficult for you.

Working from home is AWESOME! I do it 50-60% of the time, the rest is at my office(on my own) a 20min drive away & out & about doing stuff wherever jobs take me, SCREW the daily commute into the city, it slowly & very surely kills you & your soul!

But now I am thinking about building my own office, 2-3minutes walk from home to keep them a bit separate & ditch the office as it borders on useless now, it will be like home very cottage like, down the road the Mrs & I can downsize into the "office" & rent/sell our house or the reverse rent out or perhaps sell the office.

I absolutely refuse to do the commute thing ever again here, nothing good comes of it only bad.

Make a change for the positive ditch the office/salaryman crap, you still have to WORK but its light years better. I aint lonely I am talking & emailing etc all year long!
