What are your favourite Japanese snacks?

I’m quite partial to those sweet potato chips that come out in Autumn/Winter.

Altria! You don't like Nodogashi Nama! I was looking at an ad on the train and I remembered what you said about throwing some of it out, and I was thinking this stuff is a piece of crap like the rest of it's happoshu cousins...!

Kaki no Tane. With Peanuts. Yay!

Product of the town where I last lived in Niigata - Kameda (now subsumed into Niigata City). There's a Japanese shop up the road from here that sells them, so we occasionally treat ourselves.

    Kit-kat comes in Matcha?

Yup - it's rather good. Much better than the dreadful pineapple KitKat that was out 6 years ago, or the tooth-achingly sweet lemon cheesecake one.

    yuzu nama-yatsuhashi

No way! Can't believe I never had the opportunity to try those. Yet another reason to go back to Japan....

I used to like Rummy chocolate - office-friendly afternoon drinking :-)

Kokutou manju from Maruya Honten in Niigata (best kokutou manju I've ever tasted).

    Maruya Honten's Raisin Sando cookies.

Oh, lots of things. I miss omiyage food!

I think Mr Zaichik and I need to make a trip to the Japanese supermarket in town....

MSG is always good if not good for you. Oh well... who lives forever?

None, there is no such thing as "good" Japanese snacks. All of them has this funky, peculiar taste that even my cat doesn't get near it.

Really, I am speaking from the bottom of my heart. I prefer Lays Potato Chips.

Just a few: Edamame or even better, Chamame any time and not necessarily accompanying alcoholic beverages. 厚焼きおせんべい, with 緑茶. Ebi-senbei (not fried, much better). Sweet potato yokan (imo-yokan?)

Kurogoma ( black sesame ) ice cream is quite yummy.

  • lunach1ck at 08:03 PM JST - 31st March

    Wasabi ice cream.

My favourite "snacks" are the ones that I go to on business and the Mama-san takes a fancy to me...
