I will step outside the box and offer my five favorite Japanese sci-fi movies. 5 - Latitude Zero - Cesar Romero and Joseph Cotten starring together, how can you go wrong? 4 - The Mysterians - alien abduction 35 years before the X-Files. 3 - Gorath - Utterly preposterous end of the world scenario but Kumi Mizuno in the bathtub makes it worth watching. 2 - Yog, Monster from Space - if your kaiju clips end up in a Ministry video, it has to be good. 1 - Godzilla vs Mothra - an absolute masterpiece - everything clicks - Honda's visionary directing, Ifukube's brilliant score, Tsuburaya's signature special effects, Takarada's impassioned performance, Sekizawa's genius screenplay, mighty radioactive monsters trampling Japan in a battle to the death, and the Peanuts !!!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

So, lots of down votes, but not so many people putting their ideas out.

I'm like the love that 5th Element is getting. Whenever that is on, I have watch or start off the DRV. The same goes for Chronicles of Riddick, Galaxy Quest and a few other ZERO-acclaim scifi movies. Fun-to-watch should matter as much as fantastic story.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

The Star Wars Trilogy, Episode 1( loooove Darth Maul!) Terminatior 1&2 ,Armageddon, Independance Day

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

In no particular order:

2001, A Space Odessey Dark City The Matrix Blade Runner Terminator I

And, in the great science fiction fun but not necessarily indelibly great movie-making category:

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension Star Wars Episode IV Men in Black I Independence Day Total Recall

The Thing (1982)

@theFu

I agree. What's with all the down arrows. Someone must really hate Sci-fi, or have nothing more stimulating in their lives but to down arrow people

0 ( +0 / -0 )

We obviously have different tastes and we will never agree, but I will say some of you really scraped the bottom of the barrel for Syfy flicks.

I personally would go "more" with Chronic's selections. Space 1999?? Holy crap forgot about that one, but it was a darn good show. I also liked Outer Limits, Kolchak-The Night Stalker Original Predator but those are my selections, don't expect ya'll to agree, I understand, tastes are subjective, but I like a lot of the classics.

heh everyone who listed movies has a negative rating.....

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Some of the movies I liked from the list above...

12 Monkeys. I remember not knowing anything about it and really liking it. Terry Gilliam is amazing. Nice calls on Westworld ("sloppy with your drink"), The Thing. I saw Gattica for the first time about 2 week ago.

Has anyone seen Brazil?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

The Thing

I will argue until the end of time that this movie is one of the best sci-fi horror films of all time, if not the best.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Another good little SF /Suspense movie: Cypher starring Jeremy Northam and Lucy Lui. Watch it on You tube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNKT_KSZq4g

Best when the lights are turned out and you have several beers in you! LOL And definitely with head phones on!

I like the Dystopian type SF movies like this one, Fahrenheit 451 with Oskar Werner, etc ....

And another good short lived series SF series was Space: Above and Beyond
