As a kid who first remembers TV in the late 50s-early 60s, I was really fond of the Disney show with the Mouseketeers that played most afternoons. On that show, they had a continuing serial adventure and the two I recall were Spin and Marty, and my favorite, The Hardy Boys. (As a result of that show, I started to dive into reading all 50 or so Hardy Boy books that were written up to that time.
The Wonderful World of Disney played on Sunday nights and that was always a great hour for me and my siblings, watching Swamp Fox, Scarecrow, Kilroy, etc. Disney was really in its hey-day back then. (Also, even as a 7-year-old, Annette was hot.)
The other two shows I recall fondly were the 3 Stooges in the morning -- (and fighting with my mom not to switch the channel to Captain Kangaroo); and Saturday Night at the Movies which one of the major networks televised. If there was a really great movie, we kids could stay up as long as our bodies would let us to watch it.
The local channels in Detroit/Windsor (Ont.) played kids shows with Captain Jolly, Johnny Ginger, Poopdeck Paul, Morgus (a mad scientist who hosted movies), and a few others whose names I can't recall.
But my number one all-time favorite: Soupy Sales!!
I always enjoyed the sophistiaction of classic British comedies;
On The Buses, `Til Death Us Do Part, Porridge, Rising Damp, Only Fools And Horses, The Comic Strip, Steptoe And Son.
These comedies had worldwide appeal and were lovely and sweet. I loved them all with a passion.
Writing my previous post caused me to recall another movie show out of Windsor: Bill Kennedy at the Movies. Kennedy was a former minor actor who seemed to know everyone in Hollywood and had great personal stories to tell after commercial breaks.
Everyone in North America who has ever watched the original Superman series (with George Reeve) has heard Bill Kennedy's voice: He was the narrator who began each show with "Yes, it's Superman...strange visitor from another planet....fighting a never-ending battle for truth, justice, and the American way."
The Prisoner, Patrick McGoohan's masterpiece. Set in a rural village in Wales surrounded by loudspeakers, I can't help wondering if it inspired Japan to copy the setup with endless advisory announcements, "Don't forget to take your umbrella, it will rain today."
A theme continued throughout the series was individualism against joining the group and acceptance of the behaviour expected by those in charge.
I always enjoyed the sophistiaction of classic British comedies; On The Buses, `Til Death Us Do Part, Porridge, Rising Damp, Only Fools And Horses, The Comic Strip, Steptoe And Son
Worth mention is that 'Til Death Us Do Part inspired the American show, All in the Family. and Steptoe and Son was converted to Sanford and Son.
Brucie, of course! Nice to see him, to see him, nice.
I like Tarby too, but don't remember him doing the Palladium. Must have been after I left.
Happy memories of Sunday Night are tied in with memories of being freshly bathed and ready for bed in freshly-laundered pajammies, and tucking into a plate of Mum's fresh-baked home-made bread rolls with lashings of butter. Very aromatic memories, I have.
The Soupy Sales Show, The Ed Sullivan Show, Lost in Space, All Charlie Brown Holiday Specials, French Cooking With Julia Childs , Early SNL, I Love Lucy, Monty Python, Soul Train...
When I was young, I watched reruns of "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Bewitched" after I came home from school. Those have to be the best shows.... nice clean humor!
Thanks to Youtube (and DVDs if you can be bothered to spend the money), you can see all these shows again. Wonderful! I recently rediscovered The Lost Islands on Youtube. So many others to mention.
Many great ones mentioned here so I won't repeat them but one I remember well for always scaring the cr@p out of my annoying younger brother was Kolchak: The Night Stalker!
Yes! Kolchak: The Night Stalker! And on a similar vein, if any of you haven't had the pleasure, please check out Dark Shadows! An excellent gothic soap opera. I think most of it is available on dvd now. Barnabas and Quentin, and who can forget the beguiling Angelique.... Other shows I like: The Monkees, Batman, Flipper, Skippy, Gentle Ben, Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, there are just too many!!!! My brain hurts! Oops, forgot Star Trek (TOS) and UFO. Loved the gear in UFO, and the (female) uniforms on the submarine and moon base.... Great stuff.
H.R.Puffinstuff (don't know why!!), lost in space, gilligans island, the night stalker (use to scare my dacks off), george of the jungle and some mothers do have em. Recently seinfeld and friends.
Haaa, yeah, Friends. We used to watch the first 5 minutes of a show every once in a while and predict how it would end. Most of the time we got it right. Predictable stuff.
wow! there is someone other than me who remembers H.R.Puffinstuff? i even have the complete series on vhs ... haven't seen it on dvd or other means yet. terrible show but defining memories of youth. magnum, p.i., gilligan's island, three's company, the love boat ... charlie's angels ... hmmm ... what else ... diff'rent strokes, one day at a time, the facts of life.
magnum, p.i. is the mostly fondly remembered show though. best of all time. it was good clean drama/comedy/detective/hour long television like nothing ever before or after.
H.R. was great when I was a kid, loved to watch it.
Shows I enjoyed when I was a kid include Brady Bunch, Gilligan's Island, Combat, Blake's 7, Doctor Who (Pertwee and Baker were the best), Man about the House (and it's US counterpart, Three's Company), Some Mother's do have 'em and Father dear father. And the list isn't even half finished yet, not by a long shot. And I always enjoyed 60 Minutes on a Sunday night.
My favourite Japanese shows are Genki ga deru terebi, Ureshii tanoshii daisuki and Music Station (when I first came to Japan, not now). And Gilgamesh night on Saturday's was awesome with Fumie Hosokawa and the recently departed Ai Ijima. Tonight Tonight wasn't bad either.
M.A.S.H, Bottom, The Simpsons, Automan, Sledgehammer, Batman and Robin, The Dukes of Hazard, Knight Rider, Blakes 7, The Tomorrow People, Dr. Who, Sapphire and Steel, WWF, Robin of Sherwood, COPS, On the Buses, The Office (UK), Scooby Doo, Prison Break, The Sopranos (random....I am all over the place here)Seinfeld, 8 is enough, The Cosby show, The smuggler, wow, too many come to mind. Can see a lot of them on surfthechannel.com
@ Okinawamike:' Laugh-In' was one of the greatest shows, ever!
Thanks for reminding me of that one... 'Look that up in your Funk and Wagnalls!'
'The Flying Fickle Finger of Fate Award', 'Very Intersting, but stupid!'... ;^) Totally, dude!
Like limboinjapan, I'd have to say The Night Stalker, Dark Shadows, The Twilight Zone, Johnny Quest, Batman, the Munsters, Beavis and Butthead(for its intellectual content).
What was the one with thecreator Dan Curtis? Dark Shadows?
What'S best in seeing old shows/movies now is seeing big stars which you used to go to school with, such as Brad Pitt. Okinawamike referred to Brad as a "hick". Does he mean his role in the movie, or in real life?
And "Married with Children," "Adam 12" (just as the very first police show), and "Leave It to Beaver," and "I Love Lucy," "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "Miami Vice," and one I always enjoyed as a child, "The HoneyMooners--Jackie Gleason," "Red Skelton Show," "The Lone Ranger," "McHale's Navy" and "Bewitched." "Flipper," "Gentle Ben," "Lassie," "Staglag 13."
Sea Hunt, Twighlight Zone, Outer Limits, Star Trek (monday night 8pm NBC), Man from Uncle, Honey West, Mchale's Navy, Flipper,Hogans Heroes, Adams Family, The Munsters, Time Tunnel, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Betwitched, I dream of Jeannie, The Green Hornet, Then came Bronson, Mannix, Kung-Fu,Night Gallery, The night stalker, Second City TV, SNL (with Chevy Chase, Belushi,Ackroyd,Radner,Curtin, etc).....
Have not watched for many years but "must see TV" for me included Twin Peaks, Colditz, Puffnstuff,Brideshead Revisited,The Untouchables,Flipper and Lassie
Rumpole of the Bailey. Batman, Hogans heros, Happy Days, F troop, Underdog, Romper Room, The Munsters, The Adams Family, Star Trek, Josie and the pussy Cats, Hong Kong Fuey,
A part of WH"s life so few knew about.

Does anyone remember a show called "Oregon Kara Ai" ("オレゴンから愛") that aired on Fuji TV in the 1980's? That was a curious bit of TV drama...

Never saw it, but there is a coffee shop nearby named "Oregon" and I've been informed that it is named for the tv show.
