What do you think about the eco-point registration system, which starts July 1, in which consumers who purchase government-designated environmentally friendly refrigerators, television sets and air conditioners can apply for eco-points and later exchange them for other goods and services?

Well, it doesn't deal with the overconsumption problem that creates the need for these policies in the first place, but it's a nice way of stimulating the economy and persuading customers who would otherwise buy cheaper and dirtier appliances.

What do I think about it??? I'm peeved! I bought a new TV, fridge and washer last year, all eco friendly with low energy ratings, but I'll get nothing!

I think it's a good idea - and hopefully they'll expand the program over time to include more everyday products.
Perhaps a few points for buying things grown or produced in a 50km radius of wherever you are living might be a good place to start.

useless government intervention in the free market to try and solve a problem that doesn't exist. It will only work out to an added tax, as making the equipment to meet the random govt standards will only make the product cost more.

Only works on household goods if you live in China.
It'd be better to encourage people to buy less, and less often - but that's not the modern way, is it?

Disillusioned ( 7:42 AM ) - No wonder you're disillusioned! And peeved! But get ready to get even more peeved - I'm about to buy a new TV and a new washing machine, and I'm going to get eco-points up the wazoo! Hee hee!

Lucky you, Sarge! But if you're thinking of buying a front-loading washing machine, make sure you measure up the place it's going to go, and take your tape measure with you when you go shopping. I bought a front-loader a while back and had to send it back because it wouldn't go through the door.
And no, I don't have very small doors!

Unfortunately, that's wishful individualistic thinking and doesn't solve the problem in the short term. Sure, hopefully the day will come when everyone is educated enough to recycle properly, turn off the lights and know better than to throw cigarrette butts on the ground. But in the meantime, if the government does something to curb the energy waste of people who couldn't care less about their energy consumption, I applaud the measure. After all, your carbon footprint is as much my problem as it is yours - we all share the same planet and breathe the same air!
