What do you think about the government's plan to raise the tobacco tax?

Great idea ,go for it ,espescially in Japan where public smoking is still rampant,maybe the price should be increased enough ,Like Australia $14 a pack ,so it will deter people from buying them....

Stopped smoking a long time ago, so I say, go for it. Low tobacco prices are not beneficial to anyone (except maybe tobacco companies?)

They already raised it last year, it has no meaning. Instead they should raise taxes on alcohol and fat like the Danes. They could make more money that way.

Well, there's that joke in my country

After the raise in alcohol prises, a kid asks his dad :"Dad, does this mean that you're going to drink less?" "No, my boy" the dad answers"It means you and your mom are going to eat less".

Now substitute alcohol with tobacco and you'll have the answer.

i have no objection to raising the tax. the question is what they are going to do with the money the raise from it. the government will of course waste it. would make too much sense if it was used to fund health care.

Well now. Apparently I'm just a quality world citizen then. When I smoke in my state I support the childrens healthcare fund through the tax I pay and when I'm in Japan I can help them out too, it's like I'm doing a little public service with every puff.

But seriously these taxes do very little to impact consumption. I smoke my cigars because I like them, they help me relax after a long day of reviewing and shouting. Give me my tobacco, you can keep the lecture.

The world economy sucks right now. Everybody is stressed out. If you'll pay 440 yen for it, you most certainly will pay 1,000 yen for it.

it's unfair...just because govt is short of money or for health reasons? then why tax one particular item heavily ? why not apply uniform tax hike to other businesses like pachinko parlors, soft drinks, beer, whiskey...pls do not argue these products are good for health.

It's temorarily bad for JT employees and tobacco farmers until they are re-trained to do other jobs.

I think it's great. But I would make each cigarette 1000 yen. So if people are still stupid enough to smoke at least they will probably reduce considerably, and we will save their lives, and the lives of the poor people who have to live with them.

And of course smoking should be banned in restaurants.

1000 yen is good, plus show alot of commercials with the side effects of smoking for a long time. Go to the schools and teach kids not to smoke.

The idea is stupid....and I'm not even a smoker, nor a drinker.

Why dont we tax veggies for the vegetarians? Why don't we tax beef for the meat eaters?

If the Gov't (of any country) wants to tax somethinig, it should be for something across the board. Soap, toothpaste, toilet paper etc.

They should raise the consumption tax to 10%, it is rather stupid to raise prices on just one product! The government would make more money that way! A lot of smokers are definitely going to quit if the price is raised to 1000 yen, which is a good thing, health-wise, but it hardly beats the government's purpose of financial gain! Ridiculous!

I think they have bigger fish to fry. The tobacco companies need to be made to stop lacing tobacco with needless chemicals. Course, there is no money in that. All it does is improve the health of smokers.

It's so nice idea! I dislike sidestream smoke, because I have never smoke. Smoking only harms our bodies, so we don't need to do it! Certainly, smoking looks cool, but if we smoke, we will have the cancer of the lungs in the future.

Why does a person smoke? Does it make you feel good or relax? I don't think. It just harms our bodies and makes some problems and becomes bad influence! Recently, I was thinking of smoking because of one thing. It's that kj from Dragon Ash smokes cigarettes at his PV! I really respect him, so I was going to do it like him, but my friends say to me, "I don't need to smoke." I don't want to have a cancer of the lungs after all. So I stop your smoking!
