It's your own business if you want to value exterior beauty over interior. I'll have nothing to do with such things, but meh. Who has the right to stop those who are willing to participate?

Anachronistic in this day and age. Anyway, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. How can judges say this woman is more beautiful than that woman?

By the way, how come every beauty contestant who is interviewed always says the same thing, that real beauty is within, etc? If that's what contests were all about, why, for example, is it necessary to have a swimsuit section of the contest?

When Miss Alabama was asked in the 1994 Miss USA contest 'If you could live forever, would you and why? Her answer was the following: 'I would not live forever, because we shound not live forever, because if we were supposed to live forever, then we would live forever, but we cannot live forever, which is why I would not live forever.'

My mother was a beauty pageant judge. I got dragged to a lot of these things. From what I saw, there is little be proud of at a beauty pageant.

Her beauty attracts and is only there for a while. Her inner beauty is life long. That is why some very old women are more beautiful than very young beauty contestants.

Silly silly silly. Nonsense. Absolutely. I like the bathing suit part though . . .

I only watch a beauty pageant when I channel-surf through one, and then I only check it out for probably less than a couple of minutes.

After the Jon Benet Ramsey murder, my whole nation became conscious of those "beauty" pageants for kiddies. Now that was degenerate... dressin' up little kids to look like hookers... just like bidness as usual in Holland.

I belive that it is an insult to women and femininity at large, before this type of contest were done by slave merchants to sell female slaves and attract the highest price related to the woman's beauty, in Arabia this was and is still done to grade Camles and Horses for mating, I think that beauty pageants should be banned and criminalized by the UN!

Nothing wrong with them...hurts noone and is no more frivolous than a lot of other entertainment. Besides, it's nice to see some 'beautiful' woman who don't like like bony heroin addicts (like so many 'models' these days)

Certainly doesn't kill anyone, makes money for charities I think. But seems a little strange that women in this day and age claim that they don't want to judged on their looks, want to be equal to men but will step up on stage to be judged (for the greater part) on those looks. I find them to be one of the many strange contradictions in society.

Hey - Betting there is a Mr Universe, too. Plenty of men in the world also want to be judged on their looks. What is wrong with having a combination of both?

I think they should be MORE publicized - and I`m NOT a guy! Sure, it realy pees me off as I hurtle well into my thirties that these girls have far nicer butts than I do ( anymore! ;) ) but you know, I have no objection to something that provides a better role model for my daughter than the likes of Victoria Beckham, Jessica Simpson and any reality TV star.

Take last years Miss Universe Japan winner Kurara Chibana - she was a beautiful, intelligent, well-accomplished young woman. I would far rather my daughter looked up to her than any bratty pop star.

The only thing I would like to see is them making more use of their talents and publicity to do more charity work in Japan particularly. I see Kurara promoting Maybelline all the time, but I never see her drawing attention to childhood disease research, or breast cancer screening, or maybe teaching young girls the self-esteem to avoid drugs/alcohol/pregnancy etc. Just my opinion.

If more beauty contests were like Miss Teen USA, then I'm all for them:

Why I care, you should, anything I think! I've never watched a beauty contest for more than 30 seconds. But they make money, people watch, winners make money for charities, so I guess there are worse things in the world.

    Beauty contests.

As much as I like looking at pretty ladies, I can't help but feeling that we should have out grown them by now.

I particularly enjoyed what Miss Universe said about adult literacy. Now, let's get it on.

Then we can enjoy their sparkling wit and enormous breasts.

Did any of the ladies have a tattoo? How about sash rash? Did all that smiling cause carpal tunnel syndrome of the cheeks for anybody? How is the reception on one's walkman affected by the tiara? How long before the runner up is awarded the prize as the winner is publicly disgraced by a sex scandal? From now on, don't even bother asking for her phone number unless you're Mr. Universe. Except for the hot body, I thought Miss U kind of looked like Don Rickles after her mascara was sandblasted off. I see the tiara is now going for $750 on e-babe.

There was something a few years ago about how the contestants from a certain asian country had all received plastic surgery and remedial dentistry. I think the judges were aware of this and refrained from voting for them, because they never won.

I stopped watching them years ago. Don't think much of race queens or fashion models either. Nurses and airline flight attendants are okay, though. They work for a living and seem to have nice personalities.

there should be another one, a kind of no holds barred kind of contest where: - new kind of competiton would envolve: wet t-shirt contest, mud wrestling, bra and panties match and drinking contest. - acts like miss nevada stripping at a bar would win points, not let you dq'd - winning can be done by any means necessary. if it involves shagging the judge, then be it, but you better be good at it. - i would be the judge

True. But I find it funny that all the male versions of "beauty" pageants only feature body building freaks that I'd wager the majority of the population find rather repulsive.

"Hey - Betting there is a Mr Universe, too. Plenty of men in the world also want to be judged on their looks. What is wrong with having a combination of both?".

The question was about Miss Universe contests and as JT mods have often deleted my comments for being ever-so slightly off-topic I chose not to make any comment about the men's competitions.

Puerto Rico will win again for 6th time.

the french lady has done wonders for Japan, but its time for them to take a back seat.

I dated a Miss Nihon runnerup. Gorgeous, but worst girlfriend ever. Obsessed with clothes. Overemotional. Over flirtatious. Took taxis everywhere (claimed the train chikan were too much too handle). Relationship was a three-month ordeal. When I'm slow to urinate, I just imagine her face down there at the bottom of the urinal.

usually the winners are not my type so I could care less. As others have said people watch and the events make money so why not.

I guess beauty contests are sort of like reality TV without the gross behaviour. Not my cup of tea but I don't see any more harm in them than most other human endeavours.

A total waste of time and money!

True, but the same could be said of most forms of "entertainment". Most tv shows are a waste of money. A lot of crappy music is a waste of money. G8 summits are a waste of money.. where do we draw the line?
