they are a necessity in a busy world, with shrinking free time and fewer social interactions, and where net communication slowly takes over. many people have the image of a dating site being a seedy place for playing around, but the truth is that, like with "real life" dating, you meet players, serious people, nerds, gold diggers and all the other varieties. in my experience with Japanese dating sites, you meet many career women that are very nice, but they are simply too busy and have limited chances to meet people outside their circles.
The internet is a part of real life by now. Everyone who didn't realise this yet clearly lives in the past. As such, it is as natural to search new friends or mates on the web as in sports clubs, bars, or wherever You happen to be frequently. Why should the internet be special (positive or negative)?
People being people, I suppose you're likely to encounter the same mix at a dating site as you would at a sports bar - I mean, most young people go to bars to hook up, if memory serves. Still, whether the two will match would be difficult to judge from dating sites. Ironically, I met Ms. Laguna at a bar in Kyoto, and our chance encounter led to further meetings and outings and adventures where we were able to judge ourselves against each other thoroughly. I suspect that dating sites push the envelope a bit too fast in terms of expectations.
A more appropriate place might be sites where people with similar hobbies might gather. My wife is a trooper, camping and snorkeling and traveling third-class in impoverished countries; if she'd been the type to carry a parasol, we'd have stood no chance. How can you tell that from a dating site?
I think they're okay if you're stuck in a rut ... otherwise, there's nothing like meeting a person face-to-face the first time, to know if there's any attraction at all.

Women should Google "It's not OK, OK Cupid" for an idea of the caliber of men that hang around dating sites.
