Pretty good on the whole, with some nice varieties; would prefer an easier source of things like serious sports drinks, rather than the sugar laden things you get in Combinis, but for recreational drinking, on the soft end of the scale, I have found some nice stuff.
I had heard of SWEAT before my first visit to Japan, but when I saw it in a vending machine in Ueno and tasted it, I liked it, but I think my favourite has to be CC Lemon. Really refreshing.
Some very interesting tastes to say the least! But, how about some of the names? Pocari Sweat, Calpis? I never thought of drinking someone's perspiration, let alone bovine urine! (^.^) !
One I tried recently by accident (I wasn't paying attention and thought it was just a can of coffee, the can design was all nice earth tones of brown and green) turned out to be green tea-flavoured coffee.
No, not good. Tea-flavoured icecream, yes. This, I had to pour away, and not down my throat.
CC Lemon is really nice, I've been drinking lots of it. Calpis just tastes like watered milk with sugar, can't stand it. The happoshu things taste horrible (but when I was a student, that was the cheapest option). Wasabi-flavored juice was kinda cool
YES!! YES!!! That devil-spawned Green Tea Coffee concoction that showed up about 3-4 months ago. Dear sweet Aunt Petunia, that was the foulest stuff I've ever had here in Japan in what has been an otherwise pleasant journey throughuniquely named/flavored beverages. I shudder just remembering how wrong the first mouthful was.
Meanwhile, a thumbs-up on the above mentioned odds and ends. CC Lemon, good. Asashi Super Dry: Great! I even like Calpis from time to time.
I have a soft spot in my heart for Dodekamin. It's supposed to be an energy drink of some sort, but I just like the flavor. Very unusual.
One I really like is the ウコンの力, ("ukon no chikara") which is in the energy drinks section, a little golden tin bottle, with turmeric. It's supposed to be a pick-me-up after a night's drinking, as turmeric is good for the liver, but I just like it because it reminds me on Penbritten, a kids' liquid penicillen (I suppose) medicine we used to get as kids in the UK. I used to take surreptitious swigs of it - Mum kept it in the larder - and this somehow reminds me of it. Lovely.
The double-strength version isn't as nice.

I think they can be interesting. Some are gross, but there have been some nice ones.
I just wish we could get dandelion & burdock, Tizer, and Irn-Bru.

I dig on Dydo's Gym. Vroom! - and it makes my urine stream a neon highlighter's dream!

I love Calpis! But then my Japanese friend pointed out that it looks like... oh, you know what it looks like. Tastes much better though.

Today I bought a drink containing pureed watermelon and nata de coco. A bit on the sweet side. I probably won't have it again.
