I think "allowing" people to dress for work according to the weather is something that needs no moniker, it is common sense.

But we all know "common sense" in Japan must be decreed; tv adverts, newsletters, train illustrations, etc.

Keeping offices at 28C in Summer is tantamount to sending slaves to the salt mines.

Good idea. Save electricity, and don't wear 3 layers of clothing on a hot day, so you don't need the aircon fullon.

I thought this has been going on since PM Koizumi days...are we out of date here?

    Gotta save electricity somehow.

I like Cool Biz. There's pressure to dress a certain formal way so if the government takes the lead in dressing for the weather others will follow.

I think it should be flexible re weather. Before it was always 6/1-3/31, and in Sept. everybody was in long sleeves, although the temperature was +35C. This year they luckily plan to run it until Oct and started already in May. Keep it that way in the future.

Oh and for ladies: there is kind of an unwritten rule in Japan to wear pantyhose in office. Let's get rid of that.

5 years ago people stayed very bad with offices at 28 degrees.

Last year almost 1000 old people died for high temperature.

This summer I think that ten of thousands of old people will die or hospitalized when humidity will be high and temperature will go uo 38 degrees.

Fukushima plant only scare people, with zero deads and zero hurted, instead no elettricity will do a lot of deads, more than the tsunami.

But people is stupid because journalist say to be scared for nuclear plants, and prefer that thousands will die for no elettricity.

Dear Japan times write, please, at end of august how many people will be died because the governament will be closed ten nuclear plants.

It should be mandate.Goverment must order Cool Biz to companies. In Japan, old people think it rude not to ware jaket or tie. It's efficiency in work that counts.

alexdai: You must be kidding. But if you wanna freeze your lazy ass with aircon, go ahead - nobody is stopping you. How about we save electricity on unnecessary activities, so we can still air condition at old folks' homes?

I signed yesterday a petition to close down pachinko parlors. The people who collected signatures had a poster describing what a huge amount of electricity pachinko parlors use.

Another place to save would be by turning off all the drink vending machines. There is a conbini at every corner, so you don't need a vending machine to get a cold drink. Instead: they could place some free water fountains here and there.

It will not work is these poor men have to go into the office in suit trousers and shirts. They need to be allowed to dress according to the weather. Shorts and t shirts, even jimbei would work, and the bosses need to show the way and lead by example.

People are not going to manage, dressed in suits that are made for much cooler climes.

Here in Tokyo, we have maybe one or two frosts per year. In the summer, it's so hot that people die. Under these conditions, wouldn't it make more sense to do the whole "let's all gaman and conserve electricity" thing in the winter instead?
