What do you think of the name Tokyo Sky Tree for the new tower under construction in Tokyo for terrestrial digital broadcasting?

    pawatan

    It's just a name.

    Disillusioned

    • Taller than China's tower by a 20m antenna

    • Ugly steel thingy

    • Mine's bigger than yours

    • Tokyo phallic symbol

    • Or, how about something original like, Tokyo Radio Tower?

    KallyPygous

Tokyo Sky Tree would be confusing for the locals, wouldn't it? They would think it was a bird or the gate of a shrine.

I'm surprised no company's have tried to use their name by sponsoring it......toyota tower

Would like to see an artist rendering of this thing. Is it to be taller than Tokyo Tower? Where will it be?

What ever happened to the proposed "Sky City" 1km high mega-building to be built near Odaiba?

Haven't we had this question before?

I saw the ads on the subway about it last year. There were several (maybe 3) names being considered. This was the most stupid sounding one to a native English speaker.

ok, nevermind. Google led me to the official site. It looks pretty cool, and the name for it was decided over a year ago and construction is well under way. I don't get the point of this article since there won't be a name change so any opinion is moot.

    It's lame.

skai- tori- it's easy to pronounce and understandable enough in even the worst japanese-accented english. verbal aesthetics aside, from a navigational aspect it would be good.

    SebastianFlyte

    Pathetic.

    skai- tori-

    It's more like "sukai tsurii".

  • 0

    Mittsu

rubbish. should be the tokyo tower two.

    blvtzpk

    "Godzilla's Toothpick"

    ^^ HAHA.. best one yet!

jason6, it would be pronounced sukai tsurii- I think. Anyways, this is supposed to replace Tokyo Tower, so first they tried to name it new Tokyo Tower or TT2 or something. I'm glad they got a different name for it. Putting "New" infront of everything is pretty dumb.

    tkoind2

    terrible name. Not surprising though.

I like "Godzilla's Toothpick" at least it has some personality.

    Sky Tree????? Boring!

How about: "New Blight to Tokyo's Blighted Skyline"

  • 0

    stirfry

    hey good question !

  • 0

    mareo2

    Silly name.

New Tokyo Tower was a better name.

Any case it might change later. Remember Tokyo Dome was known as the "BIG EGG" for a while, however the name has come into disuse now.

    tclh

The product is good, the name is terrible. It really does an injustice to the new tower.

Japanese young people might start calling it (ToSuTo) TST, as its very long name for them.

  • 0

    nandakandamanda

Young people will drop the Tokyo bit, and then run Suka- and tsu- together for Sukatsu-, I bet!

Sky Tree sounds really naff and iRobot, as though it is hoping to get some kind of green credentials. A multi-story green park would have been a far better project.

If it truly is supposed to look like a Japanese sword as they were saying last time this question came up on JT, why not Sky Blade, for example?

  • 0

    Youdontknow

I think "Eyesore on the Landscape" would be a more appropriate name!

  • 0

    nandakandamanda

    How about "Terrestrial Digit" ?

  • 0

    Rugbyfan

If there was a contest for stupid names given to buildings and towers, this name would win hands down!!!! This is yet another example of Japan using English to try and look cool but coming out looking completely stupid. I don't know for sure but I bet they didn't consult any native English speakers when they chose this dumb name.

I don't see how it's an "eyesore". It looks cool, check out the designs on their site. Tokyo needs some more characteristic landmarks to be recognized by. It's really a brilliant move by city planners and PR.

    SebastianFlyte

    How about Tokyo BinBin!

  • 0

    NeoJamal

    What about Tsunderekaku?

  • 0

    combinibento

    Abominable.

  • 0

    anydaynow

The name Sky Tree sounds stupid but I can get use to it. Hell I got use to Tokyo Big Sight and GAS PANIC and Mega Web and MOS Burger and CowPiss and Pocari Sweat...etc!

  • 0

    Triumvere

    Dumb.

  • 0

    Foxie

Tokyo Sky Tree is an excellent name. The name portrays Japan and its ideas very well to the outside world.

  • 0

    telecasterplayer

It's probably a lot better than the "You Wouldn't Want To Be Up On This Thing During The Next Big Earthquake (and we tend to have those) Tower)".

  • 0

    resetsurvivor

Throw a "Super" before it and that'll fix it. Super Tokyo Sky Tree! ..or wait, that would be dumb.
