Im sure those Kano sisters, the walking "Nip Tuck" twins, did something but for the ife of me, I cant remember what . . . Was it something to do with hammocks?
entertainment? i am with some of the other posters here. there really is no entertainment unless you count the politicians and bureaucrats. now some of that stuff is really entertaining.
A certain music producer who used to be the national darling getting arrested for fraud. Look's like Tetsuro is off the Red and White invitation list this year (hah).
I'm always appalled at what passes for entertainment news in Japan's magazines, papers and TV wide shows. If the moderator bears with me, in other countries, some celebrities will appear in genuine newsworthy events, other than their music or movies, such as getting busted for various minor crimes, charity events, U.N. meetings, supporting presidential candidates, helping the New Orleans recovery efforts, etc. In Japan, we see none of that, partly because celebs are employees of their production agencies and merely get paid a salary. There is no money in Aya Ueto becoming a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, for example, but there is big money for her agency if she is signed up as a campaign girl for Softbank.
So we see the talents trotted out at various events promoting products, lighting up Christmas trees, as grapefruit ambassador, best nailist, etc. If I were to tell the editor of those magazines or TV wide shows not to send a reporter and cameraman to Ebi-chan's news conference because it is not really news and does merit coverage, he/she would look at me as if I had two heads.
So the answer to question of the biggest entertainment news in Japan is very small potatoes indeed.

All those "Bestist" awards for sure!! Can't wait for next year, I'm hoping to see a, "Best potatist" then!!
Or maybe it has been one of those, "Ambassadorships". I thought the "Melon Ambassador" was pretty cool and so were her melons.

The appointment of "Ambassadorships" was pure fluff and so ridiculous it couldn't be anything but the biggest enterainment news in Japan.

That's just how the market works. In the US, you get paid $20 million just to smack your lips on a commercial. Damn.
