dont open email attachements unless you know what you're opening, dont provide anyone on the net your info, and stay away for dubious websites (porn) phishing etc.
Use some common sense and be aware. Other than that dont use the internet. Ok gonna unplug my lan cable now .............
Common sense, training and a good anti-virus program. Avira Anti-virus is free and offers decent protection, and there are tons of similar free anti-virus programs, so there's no excuse. Windows even comes bundled with free virus protection ... but most people turn it off, which leads to the next thing...
Most hacking doesn't happen because of clever code, it happens because people are stupid. The old rule applies, if something seems too good to be true then it probably is, so that site advertising free porn or a guaranteed green card or saying that you've won $1 million... well you're an idiot to click on them and send your bank details or install whatever program they want you to install .... especially when your virus protection program is yelling its head off that you shouldn't. In short people who get viruses tend to be greedy, stupid or both. A little common sense goes a long way.
Most corporate hacking happens because some idiotic employee gives out information they shouldn't over the phone, in some cases actual usernames and passwords, but in others detailed information like precisely what software they're using to protect the system... all over the phone with no identification. Basic common sense suggests that disclosing security information to a complete stranger is a bad idea.
No need to unplug, just exercise a little common sense people.

Actually, it is not 'hackers' that do damage, but crackers.

Agree with YongYang(rare).
The correct term is "Crackers" as they crack security systems/hardware, etc.
Hackers was a later term(having a totally different meaning) that got popular and got hijacked into current meaning.
But than we are talking quiet some time ago and most IT guys now won't remember.
