imo superstars as I remember them as a kid virtually DO NOT exist anymore I cant think of anyone off the top of my head. There are slews of overpaid brats in many sports, many of them are good at their sport but they lack whats needed to be a true sportstar or more importantly imo a sportsman.
The true Sportman is a very endangered species & has been for many many years now, one of the reasons I dont follows sports much any more!
For me, a sports superstar is someone whose name is known even to people who don't follow their sport. So I would say Muhammad Ali, Jack Nicklaus, Babe Ruth, Pele and not many more than that.
Roberto Clemente....One of the finest human beings to ever walk the planet and a pretty darn good baseball player to boot.
Tragic loss that he had to leave all of us so early.
For me a true sports superstar is one who is humble. One who recognizes from whom his or her talent comes and understands the responsibility to be a good role model and be willing to give back to the community inways that reflect his or her humilty. We compalin about high salaries, etc., but this will always be the case. The question for me is how will these figures make an impact on humanity for the good of others.
Wayne Gretzky... truly a down to earth guy who in some countries remains a household name despite his playing career expiring. Off the ice he was and still is a class act. Plus, his name will forever be etched in the record books. His personal bests will be unmatchable. On top of that, he brought the sport of hockey to the American South. The Great One for sure.
Couple of good definitions above, the key word, however, is respect. Is the person playing on the field able to garner respect from those watching or are they just gifted when it comes to playing soccer, baseball, basketball, etc.
Pele is definitely a soccer superstar, he combined god-given talent with a great personality. One of the true ambassodors of the game. Roberto Clemente and Nolan Ryan were both baseball superstars. Looking at more contemporary sportspeople, I would say that Michael Johnson was definitely an athletics superstar, Derek Jeter is also a fine ambassodor for baseball (even though I am not a Yankees fan).

It is same as defined by the Media based on cents or sentiments rather than sport itself.

Gordie Howe. Muhammed Ali. Lance Armstrong. They do not need to be defined in sport or their personal lives. Great people all round.

Magic and Bird. Sometimes there has to be an equally great opponent for a star to shine. Plus they made a sport fun to watch.
Ali tearing down his adversaries brings him down a notch.
