My stance would be to stomp on the head of anyone who thinks they're so important they have to be in constant contact with the world at large every minute of the day.
Cell phone use should be banned in enclosed areas where the non-addicted cannot get away. By all means provide a closed-in area where the anti-social, me-me-me types can stand and smoke, yatter on the cell phone, read porn, pick their teeth and inspect their bogies; but make the walls and door solid so we don't have to see them. Charge for it, even.
I don't think I've seen anyone on a plane using a cell phone yet, but I would probably be against it (though I'm not sure why). I guess I just don't like chattering in confined spaces -- and that goes for people chattering to each other, too.
feel free to write text messages, browse the web, play games, listen to music, etc but please refrain from shouting on the phone (which will happen on a noisy plane) A one way conference call is fine.
Oh, sorry I went on talking about how noisy people can be on the mobile phone. Well since all international flight have phones built into the entertainment system that's kind of hard to stop. If one day they decide to make the phone system based on VoIP and perhaps FREE (haha) then everyone will be yakety yaking. However, with my noise cancelling headset I could careless.
Ummm... what's the difference between a cell phone and a mobile phone? I thought they were the same? And a blackberry is a cell phone, too, isn't it? Just a different name and a "regular" keyboard instead of the traditional number pad...
As for cell phone use on planes, I'm really against it. When people chat to other people on planes (in person), they usually do so quietly, from what I've observed. But give a cell phone to most people and they become convinced the rest of the world wants to hear their conversation, too.
In Japan, most people are very considerate re: cell phone use, as that's the culture here. But in North America, most everyone seems to think they're so important that we all must hear about the minutiae of their lives. I think air rage will dramatically increase if cell phone use is allowed on aircraft... unless designated enclosed spaces are created.
Just one more place you cannot escape to. I love how convenient my phone is. But I frequently wish I could toss it in the nearest river or trash bin. I wonder what life was like when people had to wait for you to come home and check your messsages. Ah... the gold old days of private time.
HA! as much as you folks are annoyed by cell phone users, you annoy other people in other ways just as much. Don't care, you say? Well guess what, cell phone users don't care either.
Now, what kind of person are you? Are you assetive enought, have high enough self esteem and social skills to politely covince them to quiet down? Or do you expect some LAW or regulation or social pressure to do for you what you can't do for yourself?
Most posters are concerned with mobile phone etiquette and in a perfect world there would be no problem with people using mobiles on flights as long as they were used with good manners and respect for the people around them. However, we do not live in a perfect world and the main issue is, the use of electronics devices to set off bombs. Therefor, all electronic devices capable of emitting a signal have to be banned from any flight. A sad sign of the times.
serendipity- You rpoint about phones setting offbombs is good. However this thread is the kind taht i find typical of people in Japan.
Let`s moan and whine about mobile phone etiquette, while the country is in financial chaos, violence increases weekly , and pensioners die of malnutrition.
Japanese and expats, get your priorities right, why do foreigners turn so petty re rules and etiquette when they have been in Japan for a while.
I can hera thet song "i think im turning Japanese" in my head. So waht if some noisy person is shouti9ng on their phone, ask them to be quiet, its no big deal.
You say gullible, I say I've read stupider comments than yours that weren't joking/sarcasm. So apologies for not assuming you are an intelligent being.
Should not be allowed from a purely social point of view. I am sure there would be arguments from a security & safety point of view but first and foremost it should be socially unacceptable.

Perhaps they should provide a closed space for moronic hypocrites which produce utter rubbish like this. Oh wait a minute, they did: it's called monkey cage in a zoo.
Now if you that smart, can you tell me what is the difference between having a conversation on cell phone or having a conversation with another person who is physically there?
Whatever it is, it shouldn't be any of your business whether a person speaks on the phone, reads porn, or picks his nose.
It has been proven that cell phones have no effect on aircraft performance or pace makers. Let's get on with it and get our retarded social norms in time with 21st century. Cell phones are a part of life, so let's have them on boards of aircraft.

As much as this petty bickering over mobile phone etiquette is amusing, it's also been proven that cell phones are used to detonate bombs! Are you people so wound up in your little bicker that you fail to see the real problem? NO PHONES OR PALM PCs ON PLANES! EVER!
There is evidence that overuse of cell phones causes brain cancer. Can you imagine having 500 plus around you in a small space? Little molecules bouncing off the deck, bulkheads and back and forth through your brain.
