I'm not much of a beer drinker, so I stay away from the really strong stouts and ales, but among Japanese beers I do like Asahi Super Dry and Kirin's Heartland (available, I think, only on tap). I'll drink Red Hook (from Seattle, available in Tokyo) from time to time, and Kilkenny (available at many "Irish" pubs in Tokyo), along with a couple of other red beers. Bass Pale Ale is okay for occasional thirst-quenching, too.

    Guinness Extra Stout.

Why pay around 400 yen for 330ml of Guinness Extra Stout when you can get 350ml of Yebisu Kuro, which is as good or better, for 240 yen?

"All canned beer in aluminum cans are a way to acquire a serious health condition. The aluminum is known to cause Alzheimers..."

Dang! This must be why I can't remember nuthin' no more!

By the way, who said this?

I can't even choose my favorite beer brewed in Seattle let alone the entire world.

There is a Portland, Oregon beer called Widmer Hefeweizen. A great wheat beer.

The non-stout Yebisu is great, but for Japanese stout I prefer Kirin Stout to Yebisu Stout. It's fuller than the Yebisu Stout, and it has a lovely smokiness.

I'm a huge sucker for Mexican beers - Dos Equis, Modelo Especial, the stuff. Some other faves are Newcastle, Yebisu beers, Guiness (with some Baileys!)... it's only 10am and all this talk has gotten me thirsty!

Sapporo beats the other J-beers hands down on a hot summer day.

Kirin is decent all year round.

Asahi is my least favorite of the big 3.

But the Ebisu range is the winner.

Another vote for Yona Yona...but Yebisu for everyday, and Sapporo for BBQs

    Kilkenny!

  • BobbieWickham at 02:26 PM JST - 30th July

If Sebastian says so we have to take him seriously though I thought brandy was your favourite. Kilkenny is really Smithwicks and I've known a lot of people to swear by it. Got too much of it at a young age and can't take it any more. No, it has to be meths ... What did you think of latest Brideshead production? I thought it was awful.

You know that Yona Yona does a good IPA called Aooni. Its quite hoppy and has a great bite at the end too. Good for all you Northwest IPA fanatics!

  • nedinjapan at 07:42 PM JST - 30th July

Yona-Yona is a good one among local beers. There are many other good local beer brands which are produced at a small scale. Kilkenny and Guinness are very good too but my best vote goes to Citrus Belgian White Hoogaarden :-)

I tried the new Ebisu Cream Stout last night. Thin and sour. I hear there's a new Sapporo Stout that's good. Haven't seen it.
