The Kirin and Suntory commercials seem to depict Japanese women as total alcoholics. Its annoying. Much prefer the Sapporo commercials and the beer is better too. Sapporo gets my vote. Its nice and crisp. As for international beers is there anything better than a cold glass of Heogaarden on a hot summers day. I think not. Also Franziskaner is delicious and Duvel is nice to savour as well. Grolsch make a very nice series called Amsterdam. They have 4 beers in differing alcohol content. Mariner 5%, Explorator 6.8%, Navigator 8.4% and Maximator 11.6%. I tried Navigator one night when I was in Russia in the middle of winter and got lost. So dont rely on it.
After selling the rights to distribute Guinness to Kirin Brewery, Sapporo Breweries needed a thick, rich, creamy stout you could drink with lunch or have for breakfast. The Japanese beermaker found the replacement in Yebisu Stout Creamy Top.
from the mega pisswater J-breweries first MALTS, then either krin lager or sapporo black label.
But last couple years I have been buying cases of kirin ichibanshibori stout to keep in the fridge as it tastes good stouts have fewer calories & i tend to sip them slower especially in the summer so a case lasts longer, just grab a couple cans of malts once in a while when I want to quaff some!
If you ever get a chance, try Widmer Hefenwizen, a wheat beer brewed in Portland, Oregon, which is widely available in the U.S. Cut a small piece of lemon and squeeze into the beer. I highly recommend this beer. There is nothing like this in Japan. Here is a link:

It seems everyone is quoting boutique beers. Everyone knows the best beers come from Australia where boutique beers are not popular. Here are a few to put on your list real beers, not that boutique crap: From Tasmania, Boags and/or Cascade, XXXX, Tooheys, Carlton Draught, just to name a few.
sfjp330 - If you ever get a chance, try Widmer Hefenwizen, a wheat beer brewed in Portland, Oregon, which is widely available in the U.S. Cut a small piece of lemon and squeeze into the beer.
Oh, yeah! It must be good if you have to put lemon in it to mask the flavor. :P
When in California, it would be Blue Moon Belgium White. When in Japan, Sapporo Black Label. Mexico would be Dos XX. England is a toss-up between Guinness and Murphy's.

Don't talk about other beer if you don't know what you're talking about. Let's see, compare to your crap beer, the Widmer Hefenwizen: 1998 and 2006 GABF Gold Medal Award Winner,
2004 and 2008 Gold Medal Beer Cup. source: www.widmer.com
Of Japanese beer manufacturers, my preference would be Kirin and Sapporo. I certainly didn't like the Asahi "Super Dry" that the locals seemed to be obsessed with.
As for lagers, would say plain old Yebisu gold is the best of the locals. Don't know what the big deal about Ichibanshibori is: pretty blah. As for ales...beauty in a glass...the house ale at the Aldgate in Shibuya is real good. Fuller's 1845 if you can find it is excellent as well. Coopers Sparkling Red ale...Yona Yona is not bad, though a bit heavy on the citrus. Gingakogen komugi is nice. Fransizkaner weissbier is great but overpriced. Stout, Guiness, through I have never tried Murphy's or the Yebisu Creamy Top. They sound good. Negra Modelo would be the favorite black beer, though Yebisu's is quite good, too. Can't forget Duvel and Chimay blue. Good ol' Asahi Super Dry goes down pretty well on a scorcher like today
My vote goes for Suntory's 'King Mugi' It falls under 'happoshu' but hey, who care's about the lebel? Not even ichiban shiboli, super dry or Heineken beats it. I think most of you need to have your taste glands checked.
Asking for the best beer is equivalent to asking who's the best looking woman. Different types for different people. I'll chime in my two-cents and say Gordon Bierch for the best Hefe style, Urquell for the best Pilsner, and Rouge Dry Hop Red for the best Ale. Oh and try the Maui IPA for a nice piney brew. (Since i'm Hawaiian)
JapaHaYn's the man. The Rogue selection coming in through Phred in Sapporo is great along with the new Hawaiian wave. Beervina we're not over here, but good things take time. Cheers
Too many good ones in the States to choose just one. Redhook makes some fine ones, Widmer, Deschutes, Boulder, Full Sail, and then there are the multitudes that don't bottle. So many good beers to drink, such a short lifetime.
As for Japan, Yona Yona or Minoh definitely get a thumbs up from me.
Sam Adams, Harpoon, Guinness, Moosehead or Anchorsteam ... case closed, no more comments necessary especially if you were thinking of listing a Japanese brand.
If you actually enjoy beer and are in Japan you must try Baird Brewery out of Numazu, Shizuoka. But I must warn you, it becomes hard to drink the local mass-produced beverages after quaffing this quality brew. Have 2 locations in Tokyo - Tap Room in Naka-Meguro and one in Harajuku. In a pinch Yebisu is decent enough.
@bicultural
must edit my earlier remark as i totally agree with the 2 beers you listed. both Yuengling and Sammy Smith are great beers. used to make special trips to Penn. just to buy Yuengling.
Rogue's Hazelnut Brown Nectar!! Best beer I've ever had. Other than that I've had some good micro brews in Japan (Suginoya Amber Ale), Canada and the US. And sorry but Yuengling is not that good. It's blown out of the water by Southern Tier IPA.
But my favorites are the Shiner Bock varities, Original, Blonde, Black Lager, Heffenweisen...a great Texas brewery built on the Lenten survival techniques that boiled down to how they (several sets of monks) made their brews during Lent. Long live Bocks and the progeny of several stranded Germans!

Kilkenny. Just tapped another pony keg of it here at Casa Romeo earlier today.
As for bottled beer, Asahi is now offering a 9% stout. Hard to find, but worth searching for.

I lived in Europe for over 10 years..... Here's the list:
Andechs Speziall Hell - A wonderful Lager made by monks in Bavaria.
Grimbergen Blonde - Another good lager, but from Belgium.

Erdinger Dunkel Weissen - A Dark wheat beer from: Bavaria
Almost any beer that I don't have to pay for...... Those always taste good.
