GW--you are thinkin of "Victory" That one was a great flick.
Brain's Song (From Pinky and the Brain) was actually genius hehehe
The Waterboy was also fun ;)
"Field of Dreams" (one of my all time top 10 of ALL movies)
"Hoosiers"
"Breaking Away"
"Bull Durham"
"Bend It Like Beckham"
"Chariots of Fire"
A lot of sports movies have the actual sport as a backdrop to personal struggle/revelation - "Field of Dreams" is a classic example of that. The sport remains secondary, but still an important catalyst. Some other suggestions:
"Olympia 1. Teil - Fest der Völker"
"Hoop Dreams"
"The Pride of the Yankees"
"Knute Rockne All American"
"Major League"
"Cobb"
Best sports movie?
Wow! As many people have mentioned, there are just SO many greats.
Raging Bull, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, The Natural, Hoosiers, Rocky and Rocky 2, Victory, Breaking Away, Field of Dreams, etc.
What's amazing is how many great sports movies Kevin Costner has been in.
Here's the list:
Chasing Dreams - 1982
American Flyers - 1985
Bull Durham - 1988
Field of Dreams - 1989
Tin Cup - 1996
For the Love of the Game - 1999
That's pretty impressive, if you ask me.
But for the best ever, I'd probably give the nod to either Bull Durham or The Natural, depending upon my mood.
Sarge,
The name of the volleyball film in russian is "Путь к медалям" (1980 I think), in English literally translated the title should be "The road to the medals" and it is about the great competition between USSR and Japan, and their two strong schools of volleyball. The training of the USSR team, the competitions and fights with Japan, tactics, the adversary between the teams and destinies of the players. Very good professional movie about volleyball and very dramatic too.
Princess, your link to the Russian volleyball film ( which, for incomprehensible reasons has been deleted ) didn't work. I cannot find this movie! Can you give me another link or title?
Million dollar baby, Cinderella man, Hoosiers, Titans, man there were a few that had slipped my mind.
Rudy only 47th! thats a travesty! Rudy Rudy Rudy!
ExPrinceska. Try to find the film on IMDB, please.
Sarge:
I finally found the movie in JMDB. Its name in Japanese is Yomigaere Majo 甦れ魔女 (Revive, Witch) - this is the Japanese name of the movie, half of the movie is made by a Russian director, half of it by japanese. The link is:
Princess - Thanks for your efforts. The jmdb link works, though it's all in Japanese. Your other link doesn't work. I'm literally crying now in frustration...
That movie was one of Gene Hackman's best, and Dennis Hopper's best, and it accurately shows the love for basketball in Indiana and Kentucky, as well, though it was primarily aobut Indiana High School Basketball. Great portrayal.
Yes, libscombe, compared to a lot of the other trash he's been a part of since then. I wil ladmit he did do a good job in "Waterworld" as the villain, but since then, its pretty-much been downhill for Dennis Hopper since then.

"Breaking Away" spawned a cycling boom in the 80s. It's also one of great "coming of age" movies.

I checked the TOEI site and the film was recently broadcast on the TOEI channel, might try to catch it when it comes around again next week.
Sounds interesting, I like films that were done in a co-effort between Japan and other countries.
