'White-coat hypertension' is a well-known phenomenon, caused by the stress of a hospital or clinical visit, with reading sometimes more than 30% higher than they should be. So measuring BP at home is a good alternative, with the proviso of properly calibrated equipment and sufficient training. It is also more sensitive to picking up changes in BP than the usual 2~3 times a year visits to physicians' or nurses offices.
