By eating a basic Japanese diet that consists of a lot of fish that "contain healthy oils," I hope my brain can stay active. I wonder if they studied how donuts affect the brain ... if they can add pounds to the midsection ... can they add size to the brain? The Japanese health drink New Guromont, which I consume almost daily to prevent colds (it works!), contains vitamins B1, B2 and B6 ... hopefully they will somehow add up to 12 and thus give me B12 to prevent brain shrinkage ... Ah, a shrinking brain. Always something new to worry about ...

It is best to start good nutrition asap, at 87 it is a bit too late. Just eating 2 Brazil nuts per day will provide you with the protective effects of selenium in humans against aging, other cancers, heart disease, cataracts, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and HIV infection. And just go out into the sun every day for at least 30 minutes for your vitamin D intake.

Foxie ... if you are 87 your brain is indeed working properly from those 2 Brazil nuts a day. If you are 27, do you think you can guarantee a normal brain at age 87 if you chew 2 Brazil nuts a day? At 87, many people don't have any teeth, so how do they handle the nuts then? And where in Japan can you get Brazil nuts? Also, go into the sun here nowadays and you not only get vitamin D but perhaps some radiation, too.

Edojin, I recommend you to stop taking New Guromont, it is laden with chemicals, have a good look at the label. Instead, opt for natural foods. Buy yourself a blender (Yen 1,900 at Aeon is the cheapest) and make mixed fruit/vegetable smoothies. Buy your fruits and veggies on Tuesdays, they are cheaper then and put them in the freezer. There are plenty of recipes on the net. Add some Barley grass powder for high levels of vitamin B1, calcium, iron, carotene and vitamin B12, available at any drugstore in Japan. It is repetive, preventive measures that will keep you fit and healthy. You can get Brazil nuts at Costco, they sell Mixed nuts (avoid the ones that contain peanuts). A handful of nuts every day works wonders. If you can't chew the nuts at 87, you could always grind them. If you are that worried about radiation, maybe you should think about another country to live.

Good eating means NO junk food and very few donuts (although my local family run baked donuts is quite nice). However, if I reach 87, I plan to eat all the chocolate and donuts I desire THWY. :-)

But is it the good eating habits that cause acuity or is it the fact that smarter people generally make better choices? At that age genetics play a pretty heavy role. Some people have a disposition towards degraded mental capabilities.
