The Internet is full of advice about Japanese diets staving off Alzheimer’s Disease. I would have thought anyone with a family history would know what to do about it.

At this point in time, there isn't a lot 'to do about it'. You can, however, be careful not to get diabetes or if you have it , keep it under control because a high percentage of people with uncontrolled severe diabetes get AD.
There's plenty of AD in Japan, so it isn't just a matter of diet. If it's genetic, so far there really isn't a lot you can do to head it off.
