When I came round after an operation, I felt terrible. The guy in the next bed had his radio on. The music was Japanese bubble gum with the occasional enka (Japanese country music).

It didn't distract to my discomfort, it added to it. It was driving me nuts. In the end, I asked a nurse to get him to use earphones.

All I wanted at the time was peace and quiet.
