No drug is entirely safe and there is a better choice like optimizing your cholesterol levels naturally. The fact is a high percentage if your cholesterol is produced by your liver, which is influenced by the insulin levels. Therefore, if you optimize your insulin levels, you will automatically optimize you cholesterol. It follows. then, that the best thing to do is to regulate your cholesterol by modifying your diet and lifestyle. A holistic approach may benefit your overall health which includes a healthy cardiovascular system.

Statins are much older and cheaper anti-cholesterol drugs. Less side effects too. I can't understand why doctors in Japan do not prescribe these tried and tested and cheaper drugs, it would save the government a fortune and it's better for patients too.
