It is true that obesity can trim off life expectancy. Moderate obesity by several years and severe obesity can shorten a person's life by a decade. However obesity also increases death rates for certain types of cancer. But the main way it kills is by increasing risk of heart disease and stroke. Therefore it's important for overweight children, teens and young adults to realize that carrying excess weight early in life increases the number of years they're exposed to all health risk associated with obesity. What's scary is that there are at least twenty serious disease and health conditions that are attributable to being overweight. So if you are becoming overweight or obese, avoiding further weight gain could well add years of life.

I see so many obese people walking or sitting around sipping on sports drink, which is just fructose and water. Without the "sports", it builds up fat cells but provides nothing to build up the extra immune system requirements for all that extra flesh, leaving the body open to all kinds of diseases (including cancer) that it cannot fight off properly.

I know this is just a single aspect of the problem, but it might be a good place to start.

Nice post, thanks for sharing.

I've been getting serious about losing weight and doing okay. I recommend the app and website MyFitnessPal.com, and there are tools like Fitbit that can help motivate you to get those 10,000 steps in. (Hard when it's cold and windy out and your job entails clicking a mouse.) Remember your goal is to change your habits, not reach a certain weight, coming up with a strategy that works for you. "Strategies are for winners, goals are for suckers."

Very true. I have been paying attention to Sugar contents on products. You would be very surprised to learn most fresh vegetable fruit juice have 32g of sugar. Surprise? Keep it mind 4g sugar is equal to 1 tea spoon sugar. That's a lot of sugar!!

I see lots of fat kids at the swimming pool these days. But today's news said that the number of underweight Japanese women is increasing, whilst fat men are increasing (in size and number).

To put is simple ingesting excessive amounts of sugar may cause obesity and dangerous chronic disease. Sugar and fructose increase your insulin and leptin levels by decreasing the receptor sensitivity to these hormones and can lead to premature aging and age-related chronic degenerative disease. So the pleasures brought by sugar is not worth the health dangers. It is toxic to the body and being addicted to it can be deadly.

@globalwatcher,

Fruit juice is just as bad as soft drinks. I never drink fruit juice but I do enjoy a cold coke once or twice a month though. Get burning those carbs!!!
