I never could understand a woman smoking while pregnant.

This is all about awareness and knowledge and how it has spread. Until 50, 60 or more years back most smokers did not realize the effect it had on themselves or their surroundings. The tobacco industry surely were not anxious to enlighten them. The French study indicates the effects of smoking go way beyond the well documented physical diseases caused. Scary.

People need an education program to help them learn and understand the dangers passive smoking can cause to children. This disease-causing indoor pollutant is deadly especially when combined with infectious diseases. When a pregnant women smoke she's smoking for two. The nicotine, carbon monoxide, and other harmful chemicals enters the bloodstream, go into the baby's body, and keep it from getting the vital nutrients and oxygen it needs for growth particularly the brain. So it's no wonder why it can cause behavior problems. In the end mothers who smoke even in small amounts may have children that are slow learners in school, shorter, smaller, and more likely to smoke when they get older. Is that what you want? Think about it.
