I fully agree with getting in shape before hitting the slopes and proper stretching before skiing. However, I'll never give up the onsen and beers after. Whatever swelling I'll have to endure the next day

There is nothing better than a hot onsen with a cup of hot sake, just after 5-6 hours of hitting it downhill.

It depends what you mean by "learn". I'm never going to win a medal at the winter olympics but I think I proved that statement wrong with 2 days of "learning". Probably helps if you like sports where balance is important. And to be fit, which I thought would be obvious.
