Pharmacists generally provide a 5ml measuring spoon to patients when they dispense liquid medicines, that accurately delivers the dose when filled to the measuring line. For children and infants, oral syringes may also given out, with "reverse Luer lock" connectors so that needles cannot be used with them.

Looks like the authors have never been outside of their research offices, relying on telephone calls...
