And recent increases in whooping cough and other diseases are cause by spurious and irresponsible fear-mongering about vaccines.

When I saw "infant" and "high altitude" in the story, my next thing was to check the source. Sure enough, the was Colorado. A previous story linked low birth weight to altitude; again, it was in Colorado. So, I was nervous when my son was on the way until he was born and weighed in a 8 pounds, six ounces (3.8 Kg). The girl down the hall beat that at almost 9 pounds (4 Kg). We lived at 6000 feet and the births were in the AF Academy Hospital (7600 feet). Native Colorado folks drink a lot of alcohol and that might be the real cause.
