    To be fair, they should explain, "Iodized Table salt", yes, the cheap stuff everyone buys

    Bad, and the basis for your statement is? If you bother to read the original article, they specifically used sodium chloride (NaCl) for their experiments. And maybe it pays off to search a bit why minute amounts of iodine are mixed with table salt, nothing to do with the price.
