That would mean no cakes, cookies or ice cream for children until their second birthday

We didn't give our kids any added sugar, or even much sugar at all until they were three. The first time either of my kids had sugar was well after they had turned three.

My kids now don't have a sweet tooth (I had a real sweet tooth when I was younger). They eat chocolate, but aren't big on it, nor cakes and cookies etc. Ice cream is probably their biggest vice.

I have no idea if their lack of a sweet tooth is related to their not eating sugar as young children, or just coincidence/genetics (my wife doesn't have a sweet tooth), but I often wonder if they are connected.

It's so hard - sugar is added to pretty much everything - even in Japan.

I saw a BBC documentary that explained that one big problem was low-fat products. When the fat content was reduced, the products did not taste so good. Manufacturers discovered that they could improve the taste of many low-fat products by adding sugar. As a result there is sugar in many foods that you would not expect to contain sugar.

The AHA did not make any recommendation about no- or low-calorie sweeteners such as aspartame, saccharine and sucralose in the diets of children because of a lack of research on their potential benefits and dangers.

Only 3 times? I thought it is a lot more. Their cakes taste pretty much like shovel a spoon of sugar into your mouth. They taste nothing but sugar, so I might as well have a spoonful of sugar instead and it may even has less sugar than having a piece of the cake. The so-call cereal is also loaded with sugar. Just look at a cup of soda in the theater, its size like a whole liter of pop.

Excess table Sugar (sucrose) is bad enough. Fructose sweetener kills. Sucrose is made up of one glucose and one fructose. The two are not metabolized by your body the same way. Fructose is twice as sweet, and cheap to make. Great as a cheap additive to flavorless, fiberless food. Terrible for your body: Fructose is processed through the liver -- like alcohol.

Sugar has been linked to the same pleasure centers in the brain as cocaine.

That is NOT a good thing.

Just running the numbers but the study says the kids are eating about 50g of excess sugar a day. 200 calories a day will add up, but it would also help if kids were more active. There are places in the US where parents are basically forced to drive their kids everywhere. My kids walk to school 2km in each direction. They couldn't do that if we lived in a subdivision that was built off a freeway.

Without a doubt. Being active is very important.

But that said, exercise is somewhat minimal when it comes to keeping one from getting fat. Diet is what determines a person's fat levels. Someone who eats poorly and exercises lots will often have a muscular body - inside their fat.
