People drink basically to quell boredom. You could say boredom is man's greatest enemy.

I wonder why on Earth they don't investigate the effect of mass killing and mayhem on children. They make a fuss when someone has a beer, but the battle scene in Puss in Boots draws no comment!
I wonder if the extreme violence that seems to be the norm in American movies is having an effect on American people - they certainly seem to be FAR more violent than they were 100 years ago.

This is stupid. Kids drink because they are told not to. Same about the smoking. This is kind of minor rebelion. We all drank and smoked as teens (kids), and believe me, when I was a kid, there weren't many Holliwood movies available for us to learn. I remember I started drinking beer because everyone else did, and because James Hetfield did and looked cool.
