Radioactive iodine has a 1/2 life of 8 days = this means that this material gives off lots of radiation quickly for those first few days/weeks and it helps to protect yourself by having adequate body iodine (to keep radioactive iodine out).

Iodine has to be administered by medical people and not just taken as it can create a lot of damage on its own.

Before I flew back to Japan last week, I visited 5 pharmacies in my area asking for potassium iodide. No way without a prescription, I was told.

I am lead to believe people who smoke don't absorb radiation as much. Heard it a long time ago though.

I get stress nausea and diarrhea and I'm nowhere near the Tohoku area.
