What about the LATIN AND BLACK WESTERNERS. I didn't know western caucasians can see acurately then any other race. What about animals and the space aliens. I think the can see better then humans. What about them. You left then out. To: Mod I am not off topic.

By using a special machine, the scientists were able to map the areas where the participants’ eyes were first drawn to.

I bet they mean right after the breasts for most men!

This white man hates looking in people's eyes. I look people in the mouth to understand the babble that spouts out. For females though I tend to look much lower. And that depends on race and width.

How much public money was spent on this tremendously important research program ?

Cannot be too expensive, in view of the completely unexpected results...

Maybe it is subsidized by the Brit government, so that this discovery could be contributed to national security ?

asians are only able to look at foreigners' chests b/c they ain't tall enough to see any higher, the reason why they have to squint.

This is nauseating, all westerners are not white. And it is just ridiculous how some of the posters here are falling over themselves to let you know they are white. Please give us a break!!!!Maybe being white is suggestion that we use the bathroom in a different way. I get it, maybe whites stand up to do both number one and two while the rest does it in a sitting position.

Any result on where to look after some ones eyes tell you a lie?

Hey, this is actually old news to me, which brings you to wonder the age of the participants.

Fallible and fragile creatures, red, yellow, black, and white.

Now I'm off to peer into the eyes of a trusting beauty. If I can find one.

    xo

And the end result of this is what exactly? Who cares how different races achieve facial recognition. The more interesting study would be in terms of different standards of beauty among different cultures.

the central region of the face and nose.

I thought the nose was the center of a face. Do they mean the center of the nose, like up the nostrils?

  • OssanULTRA at 12:35 AM JST - 12th September

What a remarkably stupid and pointless study.

If you want the REAL answer just ask your computer how it reconizes you each morning.

The number of test subjects was fine. 14*2 is not a good enough sample for a survey where the results are likely to be fairly evenly balanced (say for an election). However, if the findings were perfectly split and all 14 Asians looked from the nose out and all 14 Westerners started in the eye, the chances of the survey being correct are high.

Put another way, if you take 14 swans at random and check their colour, they are likely to all be white. The next swan you take is almost certainly going to be white with a certainty to a good number of standard deviations. You cannot be sure that there are not swans of other colours (in fact there are black), but you can be sure that the overwhelming majority are white.

However, if you take 14 swans and five are black and 9 are white, then you have very little idea about the total distribution of black and white swans.

In other words, a limited survey is fine.

The Scientists at Glasgow University need to keep studying. I am called a Westerner and I have been East, South, Northern parts of the world and I look at everything starting from the legs.

"excessive eye contact may be considered rude in East Asian cultures"

Heh...tell that to the Nihonjin on the train who play "Let's stare like a mindless zombie at the Gaijin" with me. I mean, I'm not THAT funny looking, am I?

  • Orangeporange at 11:01 PM JST - 14th September

There may be another explaination for looking more at the nose instead of the eyes. Ever notice how people make a big deal about "high noses" on western people? There are a lot more nose jobs in Asia as well. I think it is simply a feature that people find facinating for some reason.
