Line and it's related apps (Tools, Camera, Brush, Games) are great. They are all much much better than anything out there. I even know a developer at Rakuten who works on Viber, but guess what they use for their personal messaging?..Line.
Of course things change and competitors may catch up, but I think Cony and Brown are the real asset... People (myself included) are so attached to them that they probably wouldn't switch to another app because of this. I've bought all the Line character stickers, so much so that my only complaint is that there is no great way to organize my vast collection.
Favorite Line Sticker: Moon Job Hunting special - Looking at the fat kid with ice-cream.

It's my favorite line sticker to use when I chat with other people since we often meet up for ice-cream. You can see it in the link. Fifth row down, third from the left.

My minutes of talking on the phone over my carrier's plan went down to like five minutes max a month after I started using Line.

Only reason people are using Line in Japan is merely because of the masses behind it in Japan. They'll be hard pressed in America where Facebook rules and already has both messenging and chat.
Saving Voice minutes means nothing in the USA where <$45/month easily buys you unlimitied talk/data/text. It was only an issue in other countries like Japan where each minute, data byte, etc, are still charged. Tethering 30+GB / month here on T-Mobile USA, talking for hours w/o worry, too. Can't believe other countries still have non-unlimited plans!
Won't take over the growth markets like China - simply too many people already on Chinese-equivalents, and the government won't allow it.
Line does have the benefit vs Skype right now of allowing users to send files while the other party is offline. On Skype, the other party must be online and accept the file for it to be transmitted. Thus, Line is a 'better' MMS/SMS replacement in this regard vs Skype. However for talking, Skype is better - clearer, more stable, better integrated into the phone (Androids, WP8 anyways), group calling, etc.
These are ALL a PAIN-In-My-Butt!!!!! I'd much rather have at minimum Email + Skype/regular phone calls instead. It's the same damn thing - emails all have threaded views, and can send much more back and forth. Skype simply because it's the best Internet voice calling system around (SIP/VOIP aside). Today, it's merely a pain having to log into Facebook, Skype, Line, WeChat, etc. simply to communicate with the handful of friends that aren't on unlimited talk/data/text plans! Plus, taking up CPU and RAM on my phone. >.< Again, they all generally do the exact same thing, so why bother splintering the world?gogogo
Facebook killed mixi it's only a matter of time for line unless they allow themselves to be purchased.
