I'm totally responsible for this. Everyone's been watching me with my highballs over the past two years and decided to copy.

  • Triumvere at 10:31 PM JST - 22nd September

Highballs, eh? I'd assume it's because they are cheap, but then I'll bet you they'll over charge you just as much as they would for any cocktail in a bar here.

There is no reason given for the resurgence in domestic popularity

Gee I wonder if it could be this....

*Suntory Liquors Ltd of Tokyo is pitching the ‘‘Kaku highball’’ with TV commercials featuring actress Koyuki. *

Open your eyes next time you pass any drinking establishment or even some conbinis - the places are plastered in "Haibo-ru" posters.

For relaxing times, make it Suntory times.

  • usaexpat at 11:26 PM JST - 22nd September

No high balls for me but Suntory Reserve on the rocks works quite nicely.

  • BurakuminDes at 11:27 PM JST - 22nd September

Was this story ghostwritten by the Whiskey makers association of Japan?

Kakubin with ice and soda is one of the best value drinks in the world. Costs pennies to make at home yet is very palatable. For the price, Kakubin, Black Nikka, etc., are wonderful drams.

The international awards have nothing to do with this trend, as those whiskys are never, nor should never, be mixed with carbonated mixes.

DentShop: Yep you are correct, this feature sponsored by Suntory Whiskey

  • societymike at 10:02 AM JST - 24th September

Isn't this just another name for "jack and coke", "crown and coke", etc? I don't like the sour taste of whiskey so I don't really care, but this "article" feels more like an "advertisement" than journalism.

  • Wakarimasen at 11:47 AM JST - 24th September

highball is with soda, so not a jack and coke. classy drink.

  • aizoyurei at 11:54 PM JST - 24th September

Sorry Wakarimasen Jack and Coke is in fact a Highball

I've been drinking them for years while the "girls," I mean guys at the club are nursing their Zimas....

  • caffeinebuzz at 08:42 AM JST - 25th September

I tried one a few weeks ago out of curiosity at a Suntory sponsored festival.

    Awful rubbish it was!

  • Loganinippon at 02:34 PM JST - 27th September

I never understand people who like to drink alcoholic drinks and try to enjoy food at the same time. Alcohol totally destroys the taste of the food. I prefer just water when I'm eating.

  • Loganinippon at 02:35 PM JST - 27th September

Oh, and I prefer Wild Turkey straight at body temp.

  • XXXXX at 03:36 PM JST - 28th September

don't drink the cola shock. It's vile.
