When I got off the airplane I was shocked by how small an island it is,” she said. “All my sister and I could do was cry. I felt I was walking on the soil where he is buried. I wanted to dig in my hands and try to find him.”

the last sentence, transends all race and nationality, the feeling of loss and love

I was there in 1985 when the Japanese families dug up a lot of mummified bodie sand cremated the remains and took them and a packets of letters back to Tokyo. A Rev, Tsunezo Washi put out a book on this action. He was the President of the Association of Iwo Jima and his phone number is 0422 22 2510 Chie Takekawa could contact Washi and I am sure he could be of great help. We (US Marines) have the remains of several of our group intered on the island who wanted to rejoin their buddies who died on Iwo Jima. I too, pray that I can be joined with my best friend who died the first day Feb. 19th 1945

Such a powerful statement. This should have been the war that ended all wars. Unfortunately war is part of man's culture.

Education and advancement have taught us what wars did to humans in the past. But why is is that humanbeings continue to tread on this path of destrcution? Letters from Iwojima made me cry. That was a movie. But the real life losses would have been many times more painful I think.
