Too many old people who have nothing better to do than keeping a watchful eye on the few young kids that are left. No wonder they are turning rebellious.

It is also making inroads into the Japanese pharmaceutical industry. Otsuka is involved with the development of Sativex, which I assume will be an expensive medicinal drug based on a cheap (to produce anyway) recreational one.

‘‘I wasn’t surprised by the arrests because I had heard of a group smoking on campus before,’’ he said. ‘‘They’re stupid.’’

decadently, japanese students are following the steps of their western counterparts to take up psychedelical habits by saying this is the way to live their life.

they would eventually realize how these pots affect their lives when they are really grow up as adults who have to support their families or to set good sample for their next generations.

Those students all need to see "Reefer Madness" to comprehend the foolishness of their ways:

So why demonize something that is so obviously less dangerous than the commonly found alcohol and tobacco?

The fact that it is less dangerous doesn't mean that it is not dangerous or that it is harmless. Smoking marijuana kills your neurons, so slowly you become an idiot.

Abused, it has the same dangers that any other drug or alcohol, the problem is that many of the people that smoke pot think they can leave it any time, because its effects are less powerful than, say cocaine or drinking itself, but it is addictive, it is not easy to leave (in fact in many cases it leads you to other drugs) and it does cause harm, to the body and the family.

With all the problems that Japanese society already has, the last thing we need is a drug problem killing off more of their common sense. It may be fine to try to legalise it in the US, but different strokes for different folks. Japan doesn't need this IMO, and certain other countries don't need it either.

Well when life's a drag kids have a toke. In all seriousness I doubt this is a new phenomenon. Drug use in Japan in general is pretty low and I don't think anyone needs to be wringing their hands about it. I don't care what anyone says about the evils of pot. When I was in my 20s with no kids and newly married we had weekend dinner parties full of white collar 20 somethings who would smoke up and drink to a stuper it was called having fun for the overstressed young professional class. When we and our friends had kids that was the end of that. Marijuana is no more harmful than alcohol which also doesn't belong around kids. As for college kids as long as they are showing up to class and passing who cares.

let me clarify the obvious that my comments about the old days relate to living in America as the drug laws back home are quite a bit less punitive.

"relative ease with which cannabis seeds and information on how to grow the plants can be obtained on the Internet" blame it on the internet, nice try. It is a plant, not rocket science.

These kids realize they need some fun before they end up as OLs and Salarydrones for the remainder of life. I'd be concerned if they weren't experimenting. Why don't the cops leave the kids alone and go to the Diet Building and the BOJ and harass the real criminals.

Oh wait, that would require real police, not over paid security guards pretending to be cops.

Non addictive and less damaging than other legal and illegal drugs in society now. I wonder how many amphetamine users there are?

  • bluebandit at 09:18 AM JST - 24th November

Oh no, pull out the "Reefer Madness" video, it's time to teach kids about the dangers of this drug!!

  • disengage at 07:54 PM JST - 25th November

"everybody-doing-the-same-at-the-same-time-please society" haha perfectly said. these people just need to lighten up a bit. they're all so scared of anything and everything even slightly beyond their understanding or what they consider the norm.
