It is not possible to 'ramp up' production of whisky, not if quality is to be kept. As a rule of thumb, the longer the maturation process is, the better the taste. The large manufacturers here are basically running out of stock of matured whisky with a maturation date longer than 10-12 years, and as a consequence releasing much younger whiskies dressed up in fancy packaging. The article also fails to mention a spate of planned price increases across the board this April gouging the drinkers here in Japan.

For relaxing times, make it suntory time! I love Japanese Whiskey.

....which was the main aim of the drama.

The other day I went to a big liquor store, at at the register they were pushing Nikka's 'Apple Wine' as well, obvious marketing to the drama's watchers who either don't like whisky or to offset the demand that cannot be met.

(for those who are not watching, the company made apple juice and then apple wine while trying to raise capital since investors were skeptical about a product that took so long to be sales ready)

It is so easy to influence Japanese people using TV.

I've bought Nikka after reading the story on BBC and then later seeing an ad with the couple on it at a department store, not after watching Massan. It's a beautiful and true story and so it doesn't matter whether or not it was a marketing move.

We're watching Massan in the States via an online site. We've really enjoyed Massan, while the author of the article called this genre 'saccharine, it is highly entertaining, enjoyable, and educational and all the actors put their heart into their characters. Highly recommend watching it. Japanese whiskey is definitely some of the best in the World, which was Massan's original goal.

NHK drama boosts Japanese whisky production

The drama is loosely accuracte. Why couldn't they have stuck with the woman's original name, "Rita", not Eri as portrayed in the series. It's sad Japanese people are taking to whisky because of a drama and not because they appreciate its taste

a large number of people take to whiskey for depressing reasons.

Rival beverage companies should sue NHK for advertising Nikka Whisky (!)

I'd hardly call a sentimental morning drama "depressing".

That's "For relaxing times... ( pause) ... make it Suntory Times."

and I always thought NHK wasn't supposed to do any "commercials"...

Wouldn't it be nice if the Japanese whisky producers could manage to make and domestically sell their products at prices and tastes as good as the imported scotch products? Without NHK product placement that is.

This new interest in whisky, which is really just another fad in Japan IMO/I hope, is killing me. My heart breaks a little every time I see an obvious non-whisky drinker ask the barkeep for whisky, and waste perfectly good single malt or one of the better blends, by ordering it adulterated with soda as a highball.

Nikka claims to be the interpreneur, or not ?

15 year old single malt is TO DIE FOR! Their is simply nothing better. Thank you Mr Nikka for your little piece of heaven.

"NHK TV Drama boosts whisky production". . . . Which leads to more consumption, which leads to more sales, which leads to more hype about whisky etc. etc.

The media sells it & you live the "role" is alive & well here in this forum. But for those of you who already "KNEW" the brilliancy of this- cheers!
