In this country though I think cell phone restriction would be more of a punishment. I didnt know the kids

If only the cell phone companies would make a "punishment" button on the phones of teens which the parents could activate for a set time length - no decomail or internet, phone calls to the parents only etc

oops - that was supposed to be "I didnt know kids used regular computer internet as much as their keitais."

Yeah, "no internet" would be difficult in Japan, since most keitais have it and you can't just shut it off. Also, I find no one thinks of keitai as "internet" or "email." I had to do an in-class survey (teenagers) of how often they email or use the internet, and all claimed to never do either. But you just know that they're doing it on their phones. They just don't think of them as the same thing.

    Agree with Monkeyz here.

For many people today internet means browsing websites, not e-mails, video viewing, online gaming, etc.

My son has his own computer and Internet connected Wii. He uses his PC mostly to research staff for games, etc. As for face-to-face time loss not in this house, we got nearly daily kids coming over to play and some asked me to teach them how to make plastic models like my son builds.

Granted at times he plays online games where his friends sit in their home and work as a team.

At the X-mas party I told the kids to head out for 90 min, they got on their wheels and took off. DS and PSP"s were left behind. BTW, all have helmets.

IMO, rather than restricting access it is better to each correct usage and provide alternate activities to reduce time in front of the electronic babysitter.

Spoke to a few kids they said they are a lot online/gaming as they are bored and simply passing the time.

    Just my view.

Zenny - I think you have found a great compromise to keep everyone happy. I also definately agree that internety usage (often like watching tv) is a way for me personally to kill time when bored so I can also unferstand your final statement haha!

I definately think parents need to work harder to find a good balance rather than simply restricting or not caring. I think a lot of "problems" stem from parents themselves allowing reclusive/unsociable trends from developing and once anything like that begins, it's always much harder to change your ways as it will feel natural to spend all night in front of a computer.

There are tools that allow parents to restrict their kids' use of cellphones.
