Sorry about your dog, Cleo. You wouldn't, by any chance, be interested in a cat, would you? Cause I have an abandoned kitten here that needs a home, and I'm not having much luck with shelters.

    Nessie, Triumvere, thank you.

Good luck with the kitten. I don't I'll be ready to take on any new animals for a while yet - way too raw - and I don't think it would be right to ask the Old Lady to accept a newcomer - I don't think she could cope with any strangers in the house.

Have you tried here - http://www.satoya-boshu.net/?

Triumvere, you could also try putting up notices in your local vet's, etc. I found homes for two kitties that way.

Make sure the people who take your kitty are above-board; people you know personally are best and safest, but failing that someone your vet can vouch for. If it's a stranger, don't let them come to you to pick up the kitty, take it to them so you can check them out. It's not unknown for unscrupulous people to take kittens and puppies supposedly to raise them, and then sell them on to laboratories.

    Well that is ghastly.

I'm working on the posters/contacting friends thing, but frankly I don't have much time. Pet's are not allowed here. The cat isn't mine, so I need to research vets and the like. To top it off, I can't really afford any of this. I'm afraid I have to take what I can get at this point. (Though I certainly won't turn the kitten over to anyone that seem unsavory.)

Moderator: Back on topic please. The subject is pet funeral services.

    My condolences, Cleo.

whatever happened to the old fashioned shovel?

Most towns have laws against burying animals. In the case of large dog, it's impossible for most people, even if it were allowed.

    Thank you, Hima.

Another thing against the use of the 'old fashioned shovel' - even if it were not against the law, with the mobility people have these days there's a reluctance to bury a pet in what will in perhaps the very near future be someone else's garden. And of course not everyone has a garden in the first place. The pet memorial firms/pet cemeteries play a necessary role.

koneko22 - Having to euthanise is hard. My sympathies.

I was walking down the street one night in my Tokyo neighborhood when I saw a man coming toward me with what first appeared to be a very large dog on a leash. It turned out to be a Shetland pony! I asked him if he kept it in his house and he replied yes. I guess at least some of Tokyo's 23 wards don't have restrictions on the keeping of farm animals. I wonder how he will deal with the remains of his pet after its inevitable passing.

If he wants it to be eternally with him bad enough he could take it to a taxidermist. Or just eat the meat and make jewelry with the bones.

My neighbor has what was supposed to be a pot-bellied pig, it's now HUGE. One night before I knew anyone had a pig, I was driving at about 9 pm in driving rain when it ran out in front of me. It was big enough I thought it a juvenile inoshishi. However, when it came over wagging it's tail and put a foot up on the car asking to be let in, I realized it had to be a pet.

Yes Cleo, very true. People do move a lot. We had one of those services when my FIL's Shiba died about 12 years ago, and we used the Kobe Doubutsu Rei-en when we lost our shiba mix 7 years ago (poor Po, I still miss her, although we did have her for 16 years).

Wonder if they offer discounts for group cremations???What about sprinkling the ashes at sea???

  • koneko22 at 05:45 AM JST - 9th August

Cleo...I was blessed that my children and spouses made the time...on short notices to come to our vet's office and say farewell to their pets...euthanization is a hard reality....your pet's eyes tell you...it's time...to set me free...

There are pet cemeteries in the states, with their own crematoriums...and your pet is pick up from the vet's office...

Cremation expense is around $300.00 USD up to 100lbs,includes cedar box and memorial certificate.
