SDF show off their feminine side with calendar

Images of the 2014 Japan Self-Defense Forces calendar depicting beautiful women in uniform have been popping up on portal sites around Japan. The calendars were created to raise awareness of the JSDF and to “lift morale.” However, with this year’s choice to use, not actual members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, but bikini model Azusa Yamamoto, among others, we have a feeling this calendar will be lifting a lot more than morale.

Applications for the Self-Defense Forces increased by 20 percent with the addition of three moe mascots on their recruitment posters. We wonder how many young men and women this models-turned-military calendar will inspire.

If moe mascots will bring the boys and girls to the club, I'm all for it.

Can I join, please?

not actual members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces,

I have worked with the JMSDF and they don't have women that look like this. There are some nice looking women, but not the air brushed type shown on the calendars. From what some members of the JMSDF have told me, women that do join, do so for the opportunity to find a husband, and then resign.

I would hope that one would join the SDF to protect their country and not just to be able to try to "hook up" as the article implies.

They have to use models because the real women members of the JSDF are indiscernible from the men.

Calendars are calendars, photos are photos. There's a market for both, and combined they make the boys, in this case, happy. I'd rather have twelve images of Japanese gardens (oops, I do!).

So, if we go to war, as an American, will I be working over her or shall I be under her? And yes, I wish to enlist!

I beg to differ

...lifting a lot more than morale.

Ah yes. Again the little head leads where the big head should overrule. Laughable if it were not so pathetic and cliche and boringly familiar.

Very sad that this is what it is expected to take to get people into the SDF. As Alhaape pointed out, one should only want to join their country's military because they want to protect and help their country. Very sad.

Most of them are a "meh" at best.

these girls are actually models, not the SDF members (they have the models names on the calendar) - also, real SDF women are not allowed to have their hair like those girls on the calendar - no make ups and no colored hair.

^ That is clearly stated in the article, they are not members.

However it is a poster to get money and recruits. Many advertisements don't use real employees.

Any case, if Japan had somesort of Foreign Legion program like the French, I wouldn't mind joining.

These women are gravure models. It's the intermediate job where more often than not, they end up as porn stars.

Think I'll be heading to the bookstore today to get a copy.

What? And have to deal with the dummies who are "in charge"? No thank you. I was in the Royal Marines for a long time, so I would want no dealings with the JSDF glorified boy scouts led by idiots.

More silly calendars.
